    • A method and apparatus using two sets of polarized light detection systems are disclosed for optically measuring absolute displacement. In the first detection system a step motor is controlled to drive an analyzer to trace synchronously the displacement being measured by comparison of the magnitude of the intensity of two orthogonal light beams and then the number of control pulses from the step motor becomes a value of the displacement measured; and by comparison with the magnitude the intensity of a plurality of light beams with phase difference from a plurality of light paths in the second polarized light detection system the section of system operation is ascertain and consequently the absolute displacement is detected and measured.

    • In one embodiment, a method determines a plurality of categories for requests for a shared resource being shared by a plurality of entities. A request for the resource is received from an entity in the plurality of entities. The method determines a category in the plurality of categories for the received request. If the received request is determined to be in a first category, the method dispatches the received request to a first arbitration scheme configured to determine an arbitration decision in a first time cycle. If the received request is determined to be in a second category, the method dispatches the received request to a second arbitration scheme configured to determine an arbitration decision in a second time cycle of a different length from the first time cycle.

    • In computer multimedia technology, a system, method and computer program product for optimizing images and transmission of images of a web-page transmitted over the Internet and furthermore, optimizing images of a web page on a network server. The method includes detecting the images in the web page to determine the relationship among the images; in response to the determination of the relationship among the images, combining two or more related images into a combinational image; and updating the web page to replace references to the related images with a reference to the combinational image. By optimizing web page images, the server's work required for handling heavy amount of HTTP requests in transmitting the web page images is decreased and the bandwidth requirement for transmitting the web page images is reduced. The quality of the original image is not lowered. And there is no need to make any change to the operation at the client side.

    • An interface includes a port and a port control module. The port control module detects whether a remote device communicating with the port is one of a Universal Serial Bus (USB) device and a satellite digital transceiver (DT) device.
