    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an advanced slender illumination device mounted with an optical wave guide including means for controlling an amount of light extracted from the optical wave guide.SOLUTION: The slender illumination device includes: an illumination source; and a slender main body having a front side and a rear side opposing to each other. The front side is arranged at an observer side of the device, and the rear side includes a light scattering layer which scatters light to the observer side at the time of lighting. The main body extends along its length, and has front side and rear side coating layers made from a first light transmission material. The light wave guide tube formed by a second light transmission material receives light from the illumination source. The light wave guide tube is sandwiched between the front side coating layer and the rear side coating layer, and contacts the front side coating layer and the rear side coating layer at an interface which extends along a length of a light guide wave tube. Total reflection transmits light along the light guide wave tube. The rear side interface of the light guide wave tube has an inclined portion which lets a part of light escape toward the rear side coating layer and hit against the light scattering layer. The light scattering layer makes the light scatter toward the observer of the device.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display unit which has an improved dark panel effect and maintains a contrast ratio and a display luminosity adequate for an LCD device with back-light.SOLUTION: The display unit includes: a light source S, a liquid crystal cell at the rear of a display region A, a first and a second polarizers P1, P2. When the first polarizer polarizes the back light irradiation and polarization of the irradiation is rotated by a cell, a pair of polarizers is formed at both sides of the cell so that the second polarizer passes/blocks the irradiation. A first cover sheet spreads over the cell, and a second cover sheet spreads over the first sheet which spreads over the cell. One of the cover sheets includes a third polarizer P3, and the other of the cover sheets includes a dimmer filter ND. The second and the third polarizers are matched with each other so that the irradiation which passes through the second polarizer can pass through the third polarizer. The first cover sheet is separated from the display region by an interval D1 so that a peripheral external light which is rear-reflected/diffused from the display region is attenuated by passing through the dimmer filter twice and passing through the third polarizer twice.
