摘要： A pharmaceutical composition is provided for topical administration of a local anesthetic agent. The composition comprises (a) a therapeutically effective amount of a local anesthetic agent and (b) a pharmaceutically acceptable, nonliposomal carrier comprised of a monohydric alcohol, a penetration enhancer, and polymer, which may be a hydrophilic polymer, a hydrophobic polymer or a combination thereof. The composition can be in the form of a gel, or it may form a film following application to a patient's body surface and evaporation of the monohydric alcohol. The composition provides rapid onset of local anesthesia as well as penetration of the active agent into the skin. Methods and drug delivery systems for administration of local anesthetic agents are also provided.

For those hydrogel compositions containing a continuous hydrophilic phase, the components of the phase include a cellulose ester composition or an acrylate polymer or copolymer, and a blend of a hydrophilic polymer and a complementary oligomer capable of hydrogen bonding thereto. Films prepared from hydrogel compositions containing or entirely composed of the aforementioned continuous hydrophilic phase can be made translucent, and may be prepared using either melt extrusion or solution casting. A preferred use of the hydrogel compositions is in wound dressings, although numerous other uses are possible as well.

摘要： The present invention provides a delivery system for the intravaginal administration of prophylactic and therapeutic agents. In one embodiment, the invention provides a pH-responsive, biocompatible film for intravaginal administration of a beneficial agent, comprising a biocompatible, hydrophilic polymer that is positively charged at a first pH and in electronically neutral form at a higher pH; an effective amount of a beneficial agent; and, optionally, at least one film-forming binder. The pH responsive film may also include other additives such as plasticizers, sustained release polymers, antioxidants, and antimicrobial agents. In another embodiment, the pH-responsive film of the present invention comprises a laminated composite of (a) a bioadhesive layer that serves to affix the film to a mucosal surface within the vagina and, laminated thereto, (b) at least one reservoir layer comprising at least one beneficial agent and a biocompatible hydrophilic polymer. The pH responsive films of the present invention can be used for contraception, treatment and/or prevention of viral infections, treatment of vaginal infections, relief of vaginal itch, vaginal cleansing, and enhancement of vaginal lubrication.

摘要： A biodegradable sampling bag for containing samples or the like, comprises a flexible enclosure defining a chamber adapted to contain therein the sample, the flexible enclosure being made of a plastic material, which contains an additive that renders the flexible enclosure biodegradable when exposed for a sufficient period of time to microbial action. The additive is adapted to enable microorganisms to metabolize the molecular structure of said flexible enclosure. The additive is effective in altering the polymer chain of the plastic material to allow microbial action of a suitable environment to colonize in and around the plastic material, whereby microbes can then form a biofilm on a surface of the flexible enclosure and secrete acids which break down the entire polymer chain. The flexible enclosure, when exposed to microbial action, is adapted to withstand biodegradation for a given period of time, typically of at least three months.
