    • A method and a device for recording and reproducing digital signals by which digital signals for normal reproduction and a plurality of kinds of digital signals for special reproduction are time-sequentially recorded on a tape-like recording medium and the recorded signals are reproduced. The data rate of the digital signals for normal reproduction is detected. Either the digital signals for normal reproduction or those for special reproduction are selected in accordance with the detected data rate and recorded in a prefixed area on a recording medium for recording the digital signals for special reproduction. The time-sequentially recorded digital signals are reproduced and identified as the digital signals for normal reproduction or those for special reproduction. The identified digital signals are separately outputted. The tape-like recording medium has a track pattern composed of a plurality of tracks on which the digital signals for normal reproduction and the plurality of kinds of digital signals for special reproduction are time-sequentially recorded. The track pattern has a first area in which the information representing a prefixed position where the plurality of kinds of digital signals for special reproduction are recorded and a plurality of second areas in which either the digital signals for normal reproduction or those for special reproduction are selectively recorded in accordance with the data rate of the digital signals for normal reproduction at positions represented by the information recorded in the first area.

    • An information recording medium is provided with a first signal recording area (A) in which first data are recorded, and second signal recording area (B) which is provided outside the area (A) and in which second data including the same information as that of the first data are recorded at a density higher than the recording density of the first data. The recording density of the second data can be two to ten times as high as that of the first data. The sampling rate, the number of quantizing bits, and the number of picture elements of the second data may be larger than those of the first data. In addition, the first data may be recorded at a fixed transfer rate and the second data may be recorded at a variable transfer rate. The first data may be music signals in an audible range, and the second data may be music signals in an ultrasonic range outside the audible range.
