    • PURPOSE: To make it possible to execute reproducing only when a reproducing machine to be exclusively used is used and to prevent execution of 1 to 1 copying on the optical recording medium of the same size by providing the optical recording medium with a mask layer of a material having desired optical characteristics on the side outer than a recording layer. CONSTITUTION: This optical recording layer is provided with the mask layer 3 on the other side of the recording layer by using the material having the optical characteristics to generate a reversible charge in the optical characteristics when the material is irradiated with a light beam of the intensity higher than the intensity of the light beam used at the time of reproducing information from general magnetic recording medium having no mask layers. The density of the information recorded on the recording layer 3 is set higher than the max. recording density which can be read out even if there is no mask layer 3. As a result, the irradiation of the recording layer with the light spot of a desired bore is prevented by the mask layer as the power of the light beam is low when the reproducing is executed with a general reproducing machine. In addition, the recording density is high when reproduction is attempted to be executed by using the light beam of a high power, therefor, the execution of 1 to 1 copying on the recording medium of the same size is not possible.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To omit an initializing step during a disk manufacturing process in a factory so as to reduce optical disk costs by providing a light emitting source for emitting a flash light in an optical disk recording/reproducing device so as to provide an initializing function. SOLUTION: A flash light from a light emitting source 7 provided along a radial direction is transmitted through an optical element 9 having a lens function, a fan-like light irradiating surface having an opening angle θ is formed and the full surface of an optical disk D for rotating the light irradiating surface is irradiated and then initialization is performed. At this time, the cycles of the rotation of the disk and the flickering of the light emitting source 7 are slightly shifted from each other by a controller 8, a flash light is provided for irradiation while the disk is rotated, and initialization, conversion into amorphous, initialization, and crystallization are repeated. The fan-like opening angle θ is decided based on the easy forming of a fan-like light irradiating surface for making the strength of the full surface of the disk D as uniform as possible, but it is better to set its size as small as possible.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device for an optical disk which can record information in the best state even if recording characteristics of the optical disk vary owing to the inner and outer peripheral difference in sensitivity, inner and outer periphery difference in skew(tilt), and temperature variation. SOLUTION: The recording and reproducing device 2 which records and reproduces information on and from the rewritable optical disk 1 is equipped with an optical pickup 4 which records and reproduces the information on and from the optical disk with laser light, a control means 19 which allows the pickup to record and reproduce the information intermittently, a laser power memory 17 which stores the power of the laser light at the time of information recording, a jitter measuring means 15 which measures the jitters of a reproduced signal obtained when the information is reproduced, and a laser power setting means 18 which sets laser light power minimizing the quantity of the jitters measured before by referring to the storage contents of the laser power memory. Consequently, the information is recorded in the best state even if the recording characteristics of the optical disk vary on the disk surface owing to the inner/outer peripheral difference in sensitivity, inner/outer peripheral difference in skew (tilt), and temperature variation.
