    • An apparatus for ore sorting includes a neutron irradiator (12), and a detector assembly (14) for detecting gamma radiation emitted by irradiated lumps (21) of the ore. The irradiated lumps (21) after discharge from the irradiator (12), are divided into two channels (30) by at least one bifurcating device (28) held above a relatively high speed conveyor (26) transporting the lumps (21). Each channel (30) is subsequently divided into three streams (37, 38, 39) by diverting selected lumps (21) from the channel (30) as the lumps (21) are projected from the end of the high speed conveyor (26). The diverted lumps (21) in each stream (37, 38, 39) are allowed to fall on to a relatively low speed conveyor (50) which then presents the lumps (21) to the detector assembly (14).

    • An electrochemical cell (60) for use in treating waste has an anode in the form of a number of elements comprising spheres (80) which locate between plates (78, 81). The spheres (80) divide the anode compartment (64) into parts (110, 111). A porous pot (62) separates the anode compartment from the cathode compartment (63). The electrode liquor is circulated over the elements from part (110) to part (111) by an impeller (86) located in a tube (75) having inlets (77) and outlets (76), the outlets (76) being at a different level from the inlets (77). A rake may stir the contents of chamber (111) particularly for solid waste. There may be a plurality of porous pots, each housing a cathode, in the anode compartment.

    • A monitoring system (10) examines data signals (12) from a plant or apparatus and provides status signals indicating if each data signal represents an acceptable state of the corresponding parameter. Test signals (32) are also supplied such that the sequence of status signals should form a recognisable pattern. A pattern recognition unit (40) compares arrays of status signals with reference patterns from a memory unit (68), several such reference patterns being compared in succession with each array so a desired sequence of matches and mismatches is obtained. The desired sequence may be such as to provide an input code to a pulse-coded logic guardline protection system (50).

    • Corrosion, scale-formation, or other deleterious processes are inhibited in an oil well by providing within the oil well (10) elements comprising an insoluble porous inorganic material in which is absorbed a well treatment chemical. The material may be in the form of particles or beads, for example porous ceramic spheres impregnated with an inhibitor material. Such particles may be injected as proppant particles into the formation through which the well extends, during a fracturing treatment. Alternatively such particles may be packed as a filter bed (26) in a filter (20) comprising two spaced tubular screens (24) between which the filter bed (26) is located. The inhibitor material gradually dissolves in the well fluids during operation, and may for example inhibit corrosion and/or scale-formation.
