    • An information processing apparatus includes: a data capturing unit controlling a recording medium containing video data and capturing encoding target data; a characteristic extraction unit receiving the encoding target data and extracting a characteristic point, at least including a dividable point, of the encoding target data as a preprocess for encoding; a storage unit storing the encoding target data; a memory unit storing information about the characteristic point extracted by the characteristic extraction unit; a dividing unit dividing the encoding target data into predetermined pieces of divided data; and encoding units encoding the divided data into divided encoded data. The dividing unit determines a dividing point, at which the encoding target data are substantially equally allocatable to the encoding units, on the basis of the total number of the encoding units and the information about the characteristic point, and then allocates the divided data to the encoding units.

    • A block cipher method eliminates the overhead associated with key scheduling, decreases the required time for encryption or decryption, and increases the total throughput. A key scheduling circuit (12) for generating round key data from key data for the encryption or the decryption and a bank memory (13) for storing the round key data generated by the key scheduling circuit (12) at a predetermined bank of the bank memory are provided. An encrypting/decrypting circuit (11) is provided for encrypting plaintext data or decrypting ciphertext data upon receipt of the round key data stored in the bank and a block of the plaintext data or the ciphertext data one by one. The output of the encryption or the decryption is retrieved from the encrypting/decrypting circuit (11).

    • A paper handling apparatus for use with a copier, printer or similar equipment for sorting a number of paper sheets sequentially driven out of the equipment to prepare paper stacks and binding the paper stacks. The apparatus has a plurality of bins, a sorter for sequentially distributing the paper sheets to the individual bins, a mechanism for positioning the paper sheets distributed to the bins, and a stapler for stapling the paper sheets positioned on the bins. The sorter and the stapler are operable simultaneously with each other. The stapler acts on only those bins which are loaded with paper sheets associated with the last document without exception, while not acting on those bins which are loaded with paper sheets associated with the last document but are loaded with only a single paper sheet. The bin on which the stapler is to act is located at least two bins above the bin where the paper sheets are to be positioned. When a timing at which a paper positioning operation should not be executed is detected, priority is given to a stapling operation with the paper positioning operation being inhibited. Whether or not the bin of interest has undergone paper positioning is determined and, based on the result of decision, which of the paper positioning operation and the stapling operation should be executed is determined. The stapling operation is allowed to occur only at the bins where paper sheets have already been positioned.
