    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an internal combustion engine having a variable valve train for properly controlling an operation condition of the internal combustion engine while satisfactorily preventing occurrence of knocking in the internal combustion engine having the variable valve train varying at least closing timing of an intake valve.
      SOLUTION: An intake variable valve train 34 varying closing timing of an intake valve 30 is installed. The intake variable valve train 34 is provided with a first control mode, in which closing timing IVC of the intake valve 30 is controlled on an advance side beyond a predetermined range including an intake bottom dead center BDC, and a second control mode, in which the closing timing IVC of the intake valve 30 is controlled on a retard side beyond the predetermined range. In a comparatively low load side area, the IVC variable control (the first control mode) for varying the intake valve 30 closing timing IVC according to a load is selected. On a comparatively high load side, the intake retarded closing control (the second control mode) for controlling the intake valve 30 by sufficiently retarded closing timing IVC is selected.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine equipped with a starter capable of realizing stable combustion pressure for a long time, when the combustion pressure obtained by combusting fuel supplied at the time of stop of the engine is used for start of the engine.
      SOLUTION: An ECU detects engine speed NE at the time of an expansion stroke accompanied by combustion pressure immediately after start of the engine, and determines whether or not the detected engine speed NE is within a range from a lower limit value NE1 of a predetermined reference engine speed to the upper limit value NE2. When the engine speed NE is within this range, since correction of fuel supply amount (injection amount) is unnecessary, the ECU completes this determination control. Meanwhile, when the engine speed NE is out of this range, since correction of the fuel supply amount is necessary, the ECU calculates correction amount. When performing engine stop control next time, the ECU corrects the fuel supply amount supplied to inside of a fuel chamber.
