By using the exhaust pressures and exhaust temperatures on the upstream side of particulate filters as parameters, the deviation of the exhaust flows flowing in the exhaust passages is detected, and the reference value is corrected according to the degree of the detected deviation.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device capable of changing regeneration control for a plurality of catalysts depending on whether combustion mode is changed before or after regeneration control of catalyst or not to prevent worsening of drivability. SOLUTION: This exhaust emission control device is provided with a plurality of exhaust gas purifying means provided in exhaust passages connected with each of a plurality of groups of cylinders of the internal combustion engine to purify exhaust gas, a regeneration determining means for determining whether the exhaust gas purifying means are in a condition for regeneration or not, and a regeneration control means for controlling regeneration for regenerating the exhaust gas purifying means when it is determined by the regeneration determining means that the exhaust gas purifying means must be regenerated. The regeneration control means controls regeneration for the plurality of exhaust gas purifying means when combustion mode of the internal combustion engine is changed before or after regeneration control simultaneously and controls regeneration for each of the plurality of exhaust gas purifying means when combustion mode is not changed before or after regeneration control independently. Consequently, regeneration of the exhaust gas purifying means is properly performed to prevent worsening of fuel economy and drivability of the internal combustion engine even if the regeneration control is performed. SOLUTION: A variable valve mechanism capable of regulating intake air quantity of each cylinder by controlling operating angles of an intake valve is provided on an internal combustion engine. The operating angles of the intake valve are minimized and intake air quantity is controlled by throttle opening in low load zone. The operating angles of each valve are set so as not to provide a period during an exhaust valve and the intake valve are simultaneously open in the low load zone. Intake air quantity control by operating angles is carried out in high load zone in which intake pipe pressure is atmospheric pressure. Throttle opening is controlled to keep intake pipe pressure at atmospheric pressure through before and after adopting intake air quantity control by operating angles. Consequently, since fluctuation of intake pipe pressure in changing operating angles is inhibited and intake air quantity can accurately be controlled, torque shock can be inhibited.
