    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control device capable of immediately drop engine speed when an engine gets in an overspeed oeration and necessity to drop engine speed is raised.
      SOLUTION: The engine control device is provided with a variable valve timing mechanism and executes control for avoiding overspeed operation of the engine using fuel as lubricating oil. The control device is provided with an overspeed judgment means judging whether overspeed opeation of the engine occurs or not, and a control means retarding closure timing of an intake valve by the variable valve timing mechanism when the overspeed judgment means judges overspeed operation of the engine. Further, the device is provide with a control means retarding open timing of an exhaust valve by the variable valve timing mechanism.
