      SOLUTION: The vessel 1 useful for melting silicon has such a tapered shape that the thickness of the bottom part of the side wall 3 is made thick and the thickness of the side wall 3 becomes thinner toward an upper part of the side wall. It is preferable from the viewpoint of the yield of the polycrystalline silicon ingot obtained that the taper angle is 0.5-2°. The biting of silicon is suppressed, the generated stress is easily liberated, the residual amount of internal strain in silicon is reduced, and the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the polycrystalline silicon is improved by making the inner surface of the vessel into such a flat surface that the undulation is ≤3 mm and the surface roughness Ra is ≤10 μm, preferably ≤6 μm.
