    • A flywheel energy storage system comprises a dynamoelectric machine, a flywheel connected to the dynamoelectric machine for rotation therewith, an auxiliary machine for performing operational tasks associated with the operation of the dynamoelectric machine and the flywheel, a low voltage power source for operating the auxiliary machine, a permanent magnet generator connected to be operated by energy stored in the flywheel for generating electric power which is supplied to the auxiliary machine when the low-voltage power source is not available, and a converter means connected between the permanent magnet generator and the auxiliary machine for converting a varying voltage from the permanent magnet generator into a stable voltage which can be supplied to the auxiliary machine.

    • An automatic immunoassay method and apparatus which not only permit automatic operations of supplying and discarding reaction tubes, washing for B/F separation, dispensation of reagents, and measurement, but also permit the reaction time to be varied arbitrarily and can cope with any of the assay techniques including one-step and two-step noncompetitive sandwich techniques and competitive techniques. The automatic immunoassay apparatus comprises: a reaction tube turret which turns intermittently at a given speed; a reaction tube holding part provided with inner and outer rows of reaction tube holders on the upper periphery thereof; means for supplying each reaction tube to the reaction tube holding part; means for moving a reaction tube held in one reaction tube holder to another reaction tube holder while skipping over a desired number of reaction tube holders; means for dispensing a specimen to the reaction tube; means for supplying particles to the reaction tube; means for dispensing a labeled reagent to the reaction tube; means for washing to effect B/F separation; means for dispensing an assaying reagent to the reaction tube; means for determining the quantity of labeled substances in the solution after the reaction in the reaction tube; and means for discarding the used reaction tube by taking the same out of the reaction tube holding part.

    • A superconducting solenoid and a method of making the same in which the density of the current flowing through the windings can be made a sufficiently high level, and in which the size and the production cost of the solenoid can be reduced as much as possible. The superconducting solenoid comprises: a plurality of coil elements each in the form of a pancake laminated one over another in concentric relation with each other; a plurality of spacers formed of an electrically insulating material and interposed between adjacent coil elements for providing electrical insulation and conduits for a cooling medium; and means for assembling together the laminated coil elements and the spacers. Each of the coil elements includes a winding frame in the form of a cylinder, and filamentary conductors wound around the winding frame and then heat treated, and a supporting structure formed of a resinous material impregnated in between the wound filamentary conductors.

The superconducting wire has a superconductor having a rectangular cross-section of a narrow width, and the superconductor of the superconducting wire has a larger sectional area at the end region of the superconducting solenoid coil than at the central region. The superconductor at the end region of the superconducting solenoid coil may comprise a plurality of superconducting wires with superconductors having a large sectional area, or may comprise a plurality of superconductors connected in parallel to each other, thereby increasing the effective sectional area of the superconductor in the end region.
