    • A seat belt system for a vehicle including an impact energy absorbing device mounted between a seat belt for restraining an occupant and a seat belt anchor means. The impact energy absorbing device includes a cutter, a member disposed in juxtaposed relation to the cutter and adapted to be sheared by the cutter as the member and the cutter move relative to each other, and a cutter supporting member to which the cutter is securely fixed. When the vehicle collides, the impact energy is absorbed by the shearing of the member by the cutter. The shearing load exerted on the member may vary depending on the tension speed exerted on the seat belt at the time of collision, so that the movement of the occupant caused by the collision can be confined to a substantially constant range at varying collision velocities and a secondary collision of the occupant against an instrument panel or the like can be prevented.

    • A seat belt tensioning device having a piston return stop device including a tapered member with an inclined surface rising toward one end which is slidably disposed within an axial hole of a piston and is connected to the piston through a connecting member breakable by a predetermined tension force. The other end of the tapered member is connected with a seat belt. Stopper members are slidably disposed within radial guide grooves of the piston and at their outer ends are slidably in contact with an inner wall of a piston cylinder while their inner ends are in contact with the tapered member.When the tension force of the seat belt reaches a predetermined value at an urgent time, the connecting member is broken and the tapered member is moved within the piston in a direction reverse to the travelling direction of the piston to push the stopper members toward the cylinder wall. Then the outer ends of the stopper members cut into the cylinder wall so that the return of the piston is stopped with certainty.

    • A seat belt tensioning device includes a cylinder and a piston, one fixed to a vehicle and the other to a seat belt. Means are provided for operating the cylinder, on impact, to retract a piston rod and tension the belt. The piston rod is provided with a load limiting portion to be broken when the tension load of the seat belt reaches a predetermined value. Means are provided for locking the piston in the cylinder when the load limiting portion is broken. A second rod connects the seat belt and the piston when the load limiting portion is broken. The second rod is provided with a plastically deformable portion in contact with the piston. When the tension force of the seat belt applied to the piston through the second rod increases, the plastically deformable portion is deformed to absorb the kinetic energy of the passenger.

    • A seat belt tensioning device for a vehicle comprises a fixed member fixed to a vehicle body, a movable member which is movable in the direction opposite to the fixed member, a bellow shaped flexible member, both ends of which are secured to the fixed member and the movable member to form a sealed chamber, a rod, one end of which is secured to the movable member, the other end of which is connected to a seat belt through the sealed chamber, and a guide member which is provided along the flexible member for guiding the elongation of the flexible member. One end of the guide member is airtightly fixed to the movable member and the other end of the guide member extends in the direction opposite to the movable member while airtightly and slidably contacted with the fixed member at an urgent time such as upon a vehicle impact, a high pressure gas is produced and is poured into the sealed chamber. Then, the flexible member which is usually contracted, is elongated due to the high gas pressure. Since the flexible member is connected to the guide member through the movable member, the guide member guides the elongation of the flexible member without generating any buckling deformation. Therefore, the seat belt which is connected to the movable member through the rod is certainly tensioned to restrain an occupant with safety.

    • An energy absorbing device for use with a vehicular seat belt includes a housing adapted to be secured to the vehicle and defines a circular interior space and a narrow passage extending between the interior space and the outer surface of the housing. An elongated rod-like strip of a metal has a coiled end portion having a plurality of turns disposed in the circular space. An intermediate portion of the metal strip extends from the interior space outwardly through the narrow passage and terminates in the other end which is adapted to be connected to the seat belt. The junction between the circular space and the narrow passage is shaped to bend successive portions of the metal strip and guide them into the narrow passage when a tension of a magnitude greater than the bending stress of the metal strip is applied to the outer end of the strip during a collision.

    • A piston return stop device for seat belt tensioning equipment. Connected at one end to a seat belt through a cylinder is a piston having a tapered portion the diameter of which enlarges toward its other end. A cylindrical sliding member is slidably disposed between the cylinder and piston so as to slide together with the piston when the piston is thrust to tension the seat belt. Then the stopper member is pushed up by the tapered portion of the piston to cut into the inner wall of the piston. As a result, the return of the piston is certainly and safely stopped.

    • A seat belt retracting and winding device of the type including spring means including first and second springs imparting a torque to the winding shaft so as to retract the seat belt wound therearound, and control means for changing the torque applied to said winding shaft by the spring means depending upon whether an occupant fastens the seat belt and is restrained by the tension thereof or the occupant releases the seat belt so that the latter is being wound. Thirdly, erratic assembly of a friction disk and a cam disk of the control means may be avoided by the improved designs thereof. Fourthly, when the seat belt is retracted and rewound, the engagement of the pawl with the cam disk may be completely prevented so that damage to the device may be prevented and consequently reliable and dependable operation may be ensured. Finally, the axial movement of the first spring may be prevented, and therefore, the satisfactory operation of the device may be ensured.

A piston is slidably disposed within a cylinder so as to move in only one direction. Return stop means prevents the piston from moving in an opposite direction. A metallic deformable member is disposed within a cavity of the piston, one end of the member being fixed to the piston, the other end thereof being connected to a seat belt. Piston operating means moves the piston within the cylinder at an urgent time and tensions the seat belt to restrain the passenger. When the tension force applied to the seat belt exceeds the deforming stress value of the metallic deformable member, the member is plastically deformed and the seat belt is drawn out of the cylinder to absorb the kinetic energy of the passenger.
