    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnesium-based composite material which has excellent strength at room temperature to high temperature while suppressing decrease in corrosion resistance and elongation by using a smaller amount of metal particles.SOLUTION: The magnesium-based composite material uses a Ca-containing magnesium alloy as a matrix and metal particles are dispersed on the grain boundaries of the magnesium alloy. The maximum crystal grain diameter of the Ca-containing magnesium alloy is 20 μm or less, the maximum particle diameter of the metal particles is 30 μm or less, and the amount of the metal particles is 0.1-1 vol% of the composite material. This magnesium-based composite material can be obtained by mechanically comminuting a mixture of the Ca-containing magnesium alloy as the matrix and the metal powder as the metal particles in a solid phase and subjecting the comminuted mixture or a compact thereof to heating and plastic working at a temperature less than a melting point.
