    • An apparatus for use in kiosks or other computerized devices for filtering out selected key codes transmitted between an input device, such as a keyboard, and a host computer. The apparatus includes an input port to receive key codes transmitted from a keyboard en route to a host computer or workstation. A key code filter may be used to filter out or block selected key codes, sequences of key codes, and combinations of key codes, and to prevent unauthorized persons from accessing certain functions of the host computer. Key codes blocked or filtered out may be modified in accordance with each particular system. Once selected key codes are filtered out, an output port passes the remaining unblocked key codes to a host computer.

A first reflective device is in optical communication with the infrared transmitting device, said first reflective device configured to redirect an infrared beam originating from the infrared transmitting device behind the display screen, over a front side of said display screen. A second reflective device is in optical communication with the first reflective device, the second reflective device configured to redirect the infrared beam from the front side of said display screen to the infrared detecting device behind the display screen.

    • A method and system for enabling reliable verification of items being purchased using a self checkout system. The self checkout system is equipped with a verification mark dispenser and verification mark detectors that respectively dispenses a mark on an item as the item is being scanned for purchasing and then verifies, by detecting the mark on the item, that the item being bagged (or passed through the tunnel) is the same item that was scanned. When a customer scans an item for purchase, and if purchase transaction is successful, a mark (made of a non-reactive but detectable material or ink) is placed on the exterior packaging of the item. When the item is placed in the tunnel, the detector, sensitive to the activation of the specific marking and located at or in the tunnel, detects the marking on the item. If the activated marking is not detected by the detector, an alert condition is triggered.

    • A method and system for providing a touch interface on a display are described. The method and system include providing an emitter on a first side of the display and providing a detector on a second side of the display. The emitter provides an electromagnetic signal to the display. The electromagnetic signal has a path from the emitter to the detector through the display in the absence of a user's touch such that the electromagnetic signal is detected by the detector in the absence of the user's touch. The path includes at least one total internal reflection in the display. The emitter and the detector are configured such that the user's touch at any of the at least one total internal reflection alters the path such that a portion of the electromagnetic signal does not reach the detector.

    • An improved resistive touch panel is disclosed. The improved resistive touch panel includes a first plurality of stripes of a resistive coating on a front sheet running in a first direction and a second plurality of stripes of a resistive coating on a back sheet running in a second direction. The overlapping regions between the first and second plurality of stripes are scanned by a controller circuit to detect voltage drops at these regions. Because the overlapping regions are independent of each other, the controller circuit is able to detect the individual regions involved in the touch area. In this manner, the controller circuit is able to determine between small and large areas of contact by detecting adjacent contact areas.
