    • The invention relates to a method for determining transmission times of signals transmitted by at least one radio transmitter BTS. In order to enhance the accuracy and reliability of estimates of transmission times or of changes of the transmission time of signals transmitted by radio transmitters BTS, it is proposed that a difference in the time level of estimates of the transmission times based on the measurement results of two different radio receivers LMU A,B is taken into account in a filtering of the estimates for obtaining an accurate value for the transmission times. It is further proposed that the changes of the transmission times estimated at different receivers LMU A,B is averaged for obtaining an accurate information about the changes.     • A cellular radio network based positioning system for determining the position of a mobile station (16). For each base transceiver station (1 to 5) or cell of the network, a fixed list of base transceiver stations is stored by a Mobile Positioning Centre (13). Each list identifies those base transceiver stations which enable the position of a mobile station served by the corresponding base transceiver station (6) to be optimally determined. The list is transmitted to the mobile station (16) via the serving base transceiver station (6) together with a list of respective real time differences which exist between the serving base transceiver stations and the listed base transceiver stations. The mobile station determines an observed time difference for each of the listed base transceiver stations, relative to the serving base transceiver station (6), from signals broadcast by the listed base transceiver stations. The mobile station listens for synchronization sequences contained in these signals during time windows defined by the various real time differences. The observed time differences are transmitted from the mobile station (6) to the serving base transceiver station (6) and are used by the network to compute the position of the mobile station (16).

    • The invention relates to a locating method and an arrangement for determining the location of a terminal in a radio system comprising a plurality of base stations and terminals. At least two base stations with known locations transmit a signal used in locating the terminal, and the signals are transmitted in beams with directional antenna patterns and the direction of the beams is changed as a function of time. The terminal determines the location of the base station and the transmission direction of the signal used in location determination by means of the beam transmitted by said at least two base stations. Since the terminal is located at the intersection of the beams of the base stations transmitting from known locations, the location of the terminal can easily be determined. The solution takes multipath propagation into account.

Based on the third set of information, appropriate sites can be selected for the location measurement units.
