    • An electromagnetic actuator has a U-shaped yoke with substantially parallel legs and a keeper which is pivotally mounted for angular movement about an axis located outside of the yoke to move between two angular positions bridging the yoke legs. The proximal end of the keeper adjacent the pivot has a side face which confronts the end of one pole leg forming a variable length gap called the proximal gap, and, the distal end of the keeper has an end face which confronts a side pole face of the other leg of the yoke forming a gap, called a distal gap, the length of which changes very little between and in the two angular positions of the keeper. The torque constant over the displacement range between the two angular positions of the keeper only slightly changes. The design permits keeper movement through a large angle while minimizing operational current requirements.

    • A system for positioning a data storage cartridge in a read/write mechanism in which alignment holes in the cartridge are pre-aligned to alignment pins on the read/write mechanism. The system includes a beveled recess in the front surface of the cartridge, a pair of holes in the bottom surface of the cartridge and four alignment pins affixed to the read/write mechanism. The third and fourth alignment pins are oriented perpendicular to and project out toward the second planar surface of the cartridge. The first, second, third and fourth alignment pins are disposed such that when the cartridge reaches the pre-aligned position the first alignment pin bottoms out in the beveled recess, the second alignment pin abuts the first planar surface at a location away from the beveled recess, the third alignment pin is substantially aligned with one of the holes in the second planar surface and the fourth alignment pin is substantially aligned with the other of the holes in the second planar surface.

    • A tape cartridge having a reel lock in the hub that is capable of releasing the reel at the same time the drive mechanism engages the hub while minimizing the vertical travel necessary to provide a robust lock. The cartridge includes a housing and a tape reel in the housing. A tape drive interface on the reel, usually a circular gear on the reel hub, is accessible to the drive mechanism on a tape drive through a hole in the bottom of the housing. An arm is mounted in the hub. The arm moves between a first position in which the arm engages the housing to prevent the reel from rotating in at least one direction, and a second position in which the arm does not engage the housing and the reel is free to rotate in both directions.

    • Embodiments of an electrical/electronic unit display system are described, which embodiments feature a dual-use for the port area of an electronic unit's exterior surface. Whereas a port area is normally used only for insertion of a cartridge or other data-storage container to cooperate with a data-retrieval drive, such as a reader or recorder, the invented system adapts the port area to also be used for display of information regarding the electronic unit and/or the cartridge itself. An exterior or otherwise-visible surface of the cartridge may be used for display, when the cartridge is in the port, the visible surface being readily observed by the equipment operator. Alternatively, the exterior or other visible surface of the port door may be used for display. The displays may be active, as in instrument faces built into the door and/or the cassette/cartridge. Or, the displays may be passive, as in a screen provided on the door and/or cassette/cartridge that reflects or transmits an image generated remotely by a prism or other transmitter. This way, the space required by the cassette, port or door may be effectively utilized also as a display, permitting the unit's “faceprint” to be minimized.

    • A disk drive having an electromagnetically actuated latch mechanism for latching and unlatching the movable actuator of the disk drive. The electromagnetically actuated latch has a magnetic circuit structure including a two legged yoke which mounts a coil. A keeper forming part of a latch lever is pivotally mounted for rotation about an axis located beside the yoke structure. The keeper defines two air gaps with the yoke, a variable reluctance air gap with one leg and a substantially constant reluctance air gap with the other leg. A spring biases the latch lever to latched position. In the latched position of the latch lever, the torque couples acting on the latch lever due to flux coupling of the keeper at the variable reluctance gap and the substantially constant reluctance gap, produce torque couples acting in the same direction on the latch lever, minimizing the current requirement to move the latch lever from latched position to unlatch the actuator. This magnetic gap configuration in the magnetic circuit minimizes reluctance variations in the magnetic circuit and variations in the torque constant between the extremes of angular displacement of the keeper. Integration in a disk drive is accomplished employing increased angular displacement of the latch lever and shorter magnetic and latch moment arms.
