    • Valuable substances are recovered from a spent electroless nickel plating solution containing a water-soluble nickel salt, organic complexing agent, hypophosphite, phosphite, and alkali metal ion by adding oxalic acid to the plating solution for causing a nickel ion to precipitate as nickel oxalate for removal and recovery; optionally adding a sulfide to the plating solution for causing a heavy metal ion to precipitate as a heavy metal sulfide for removal; adding a mineral acid and calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, calcium chloride or a calcium salt of organic acid to the plating solution from which the nickel ion has been removed; firing solids of the solution in air for converting the alkali metal ion into an alkali metal salt of mineral acid, converting phosphorus into hydroxyapatite, and pyrolyzing off the organic material; and pouring a solid mixture of the alkali metal salt of mineral acid and hydroxyapatite into water for dissolving the alkali metal salt of mineral acid in water for separate recovery of hydroxyapatite and the alkali metal salt of mineral acid.

    • Disclosed herein is a start control device for starting a vehicle passenger protecting device such as an air bag, which does not respond to an impact against which the vehicle passenger protecting device must not be started, but quickly responds to a collision against which the vehicle passenger protecting device must be started. The start control device includes a start level generator for setting a decision level of start signal generation to a higher level for a predetermined time from a rise timing of an acceleration signal obtained from an acceleration sensor in deciding a collision by using an integral value of the acceleration signal. With this arrangement, in case of the impact against which the vehicle passenger protecting device must not be started, the start signal can be prevented from being generated.

    • A starting apparatus is provided to start at least a two passenger protecting apparatus. In the starting apparatus, an auxiliary power supply has a capacitor supplied by a power source which is mounted to a vehicle, and is independently provided for each passenger protecting apparatus. Further, an acceleration switch serves to feed current from the auxiliary power supply to a squib for starting the passenger protecting apparatus when a vehicle acceleration exceeds a predetermined acceleration. The acceleration switch is provided for only one squib, and make and break of this switch is detected. If the switch is closed, switches corresponding to other squibs are turned ON so that current is fed to the squibs from each auxiliary power supply.

    • A fault of a trigger resistor or a squib resistor of an air bag system is monitored together with other resistors by utilizing a balanced Wheatstone bridge for providing an inexpensive and highly reliable fault detector, wherein first and second junctions of the Wheatstone bridge are connected alternately to a dc amplifier circuit with use of first and second switching circuits for applying a voltage across the squib resistor and a reference voltage alternately on an input terminal of the dc amplifier circuit, amplified voltages are fed from the dc amplifier circuit to a decision circuit to check whether or not the voltage across the squib resistor is within an allowable limit from the reference voltage, the amplified reference voltage is fed from the dc amplifier circuit to a voltage regulating circuit, which has a feedback circuit to the dc amplifier circuit, with use of a third switching circuit for adjusting an output of the voltage regulator to the center value of the input voltage range of the decision circuit, and thereby making it possible to measure a voltage difference at the first and second junctions without being influenced by a fluctuation of the supply voltage or a change of resistance ratio of acceleration sensors.
