    • [0080] Perceived interactivity in user communications is achieved by reducing a perceived delay switching the active transmitter in the communication without having to reduce actual transmission and setup delays associated with a communication exchange. A sound signal is identified in the user communication. The sound signal is analyzed to identify or estimate a sound signal segment. The sound signal segment is preferably (though not necessarily) located at the beginning or the end of the sound signal. The sound signal segment may be selected directly from the sound signal itself, from a modified version of the sound signal, or from a signal associated with the sound signal. A determination is made that a length or duration of the sound signal segment should be or can be modified. One or more modifications for the sound signal segment are determined and are provided to one or more processing units to perform the modification(s).

    • Header compression repair techniques are accomplished, in various aspects, modes, embodiments, and implementations, by a remote terminal (40), by a header decompressor (46) for use at a remote terminal (40), and by methods of operating the remote terminal and/or decompressor, and (optionally) in some aspects, modes, embodiments, and implementations by taking into consideration aspects of structure and operation of a header compressor (25) as well. The remote unit (40) comprises a transceiver (42) or the like which receives, over a link (36) such as an air interface (38), packets including packets having headers which have been compressed and packets which are potentially out-of-order. The header decompressor (46), upon detection of non-receipt of packets anticipated in a flow (34) of packets over the link, stores, with respect to each non-receipt, a snapshot of header decompression context information existing at the non-receipt. Then, when the header decompressor detects header decompression failure for a subsequently received packet, the header decompressor determines (e.g., by executing a repair process) whether header decompression of the subsequently received packet can be achieved using one of plural stored snapshots.

    • Systems and methods are provided for Internet Protocol (IP) based communication systems without using a complete Internet Protocol stack on both sides of a communication link. Various exemplary embodiments include communication of audio information over a wireless transmission channel to a wireless terminal from a network that includes transmission of audio information using voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). A first communication system and method may include a wireless terminal having a dedicated audio application that includes processing for header compression and decompression. A second communication system and method may include a wireless terminal and a network device (e.g., a network transmitter/receiver terminal), each containing at least a portion of an Internet Protocol stack, and the network device may include a header modification means that may reduce or eliminate the header from VoIP packets it will send to the wireless terminal.
