    • Silica aerogels with improved properties are disclosed together with methods for synthesizing such aerogels. The improved properties include lower thermal conductivity (better insulating capacity), lower acoustic velocity, lower dielectric constant and improved ductility. Greater tunability of the refractive index can also be achieved. The silica aerogels are prepared by a sol-gel processing method that provides better control of the formation of aerogel structures. Generally speaking, the improvements arise from control of the synthesis to create a morphology of primary clusters and diverse-sized secondary clusters of dense silica aerogels separated by less densely packed regions. By providing a broader range of secondary clusters and/or pore sizes and loose connectivity between clusters, reductions can be achieved in thermal conductivity and flexural modulus.

    • A reputation system aids in the prevention of unwanted spam or malicious communications from being sent to a mobile device, such as a cell phone. A collaborative process is used to determine ratings for a collection of source identifications of the communications. The source identifications are caller identifications (IDs) of a corresponding voice or SMS communication. A collection of opinions is maintained regarding the caller IDs. The reputation system then uses a method of making automatic predictions about the caller IDs by collecting caller ID information from many users to populate the database of maintained opinions. As such, caller IDs of users who have sent spam or malicious messages can be blocked by using collaborative information from many users, as opposed to relying on individual users to block unwanted communications.

    • A power supply controller and method for improving the transient response of the power supply controller. The power supply controller includes a pulse width modulation control module connected to a feedback network. The feedback network is composed of an amplifier having an inverting input terminal, a non-inverting input terminal, and an output terminal. A compensation network is coupled between the inverting input terminal and the output terminal of the amplifier and a reference voltage is coupled to the non-inverting input terminal of the amplifier. A switch is coupled between the output terminal of the amplifier and an input terminal of the compensation network. The transient response of the controller is improved by operating the controller in a closed loop compensation configuration during a continuously pulsing operating mode and in an open loop compensation configuration during a pulse skip operating mode.
