    • A photoelectric switching apparatus includes a light transmitter part having a first built in oscillator and a detachable light transmitter circuit driven by the first oscillator. A detachable light emitter is provided for emitting light in response to a signal from the light transmitter circuit. A light receiver part includes a photoelectric transducer for converting a light signal incident thereon to a converted electric signal and a second oscillator which is separate from the light transmitter part and can be connected to the light transmitter circuit when the light transmitter circuit and the light emitter together are detached from the first oscillator. The light receiver part has a D-flip-flop which reads input data based on the converted electric signal by utilizing an output signal of the first oscillator as its clock pulse. The first oscillator issues an output signal which is substantially synchronous with the converted electric signal to the D-flip-flop by utilizing a signal based on the converted electric signal when the light transmitter circuit and the light emitter are detached from the first oscillator. The first oscillator issues an output signal which drives the light transmitter circuit, to the D-flip-flop when the light transmitter is connected to the first oscillator.

    • A sizing lapping apparatus includes a rotatably provided disk-shaped lap plate for supplying a lapping liquid thereto; at least one holding portion for holding a workpiece, the at least one holding portion being used to press the workpiece against the lap plate; a support shaft, provided in an erected state with respect to the lap plate, for supporting the at least one holding portion; an oscillating mechanism for causing the support shaft to undergo oscillatory rotational motion around an axis thereof; a base for supporting the support shaft so that the support shaft freely rotates around the axis thereof; and a base rocking mechanism for reciprocating the base in a diametrical direction of the lap plate or in a direction substantially parallel to the diametrical direction. The sizing lapping apparatus can carry out lapping operations with very high precision. This is made possible by partly adjusting the amount by which the workpiece is lapped, in accordance with the lapping state of the workpiece.

    • A cowling and air intake device is provided for the powerhead of an outboard motor which includes an air intake duct with a downwardly facing opening. The duct is mounted within an air inlet cavity formed within an upper rear portion of the cowling. A cover is secured to the cowling to form the top surface of the air inlet and to cover the intake duct. The air inlet inducts air from the atmosphere through a rearwardly facing opening wherein the air is drawn up into the intake duct for supply to the induction system of the outboard motor's internal combustion engine. The downwardly facing intake duct insures that water will not enter into the interior of the cowling or into the engine induction system.

    • Two embodiments of a cowling and air inlet device for a power head of an outboard motor are disclosed and described which include an air inlet open only on one or both sides of the cowling so as to insure adequate air induction to the engine but to prevent water from entering the interior of the cowling and the engine induction system. The air inlet is formed in a upper rear surface of the cowling and has formed therein an air intake duct for supplying air to the engine induction system. A cover is positioned above the air intake duct to cooperate in defining a flow path for air through the air inlet to the air intake duct and to prevent foreign objects from falling in the air intake duct.
