    • Disclosed is a liquid crystal composition by which the state of molecular orientation of a liquid crystalline compound can be stably maintained even when no electric field is caused to effect on, and moreover the state of molecular orientation of the liquid crystalline compound can be changed, and a liquid crystal display device and a liquid crystal displaying method by which a displayed state can be stably retained even after the action of an electric field is ceased, and moreover the displayed state can be dissolved with ease. The liquid crystal composition contains a liquid crystalline compound and a liquid crystal orientation state-regulating agent for regulating the orientated state of the liquid crystalline compound by gelling, wherein a phase transition temperature between an isotropic liquid phase and a liquid crystal phase in the liquid crystalline compound is higher than a gelling temperature by the liquid crystal orientation state-regulating agent. The liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal layer formed of the liquid crystal composition.

    • A liquid crystal composition comprising a liquid crystal compound, a gelling agent comprising a hydrogen-bonded compound with polymerizable double bonds at both ends to form a gelatinizable mixture with the liquid crystal compound, and a photoinitiator causing a polymerization reaction of the hydrogen-bonded compound of the gelling agent is disclosed. Because the denatured liquid crystal composition, obtainable by photo polymerization of the non-denatured liquid crystal composition, has alignment direction self-control characteristics, the liquid crystal composition can be reversibly changed between the isotropic state and the aligned gelatinized state by controlling the temperature conditions not only in a non-denatured state but also in a denatured state. A liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition, a method for manufacturing the same, and a method for controlling the same are also disclosed.

    • Disclosed is a novel photo-responsive liquid crystal composition in which an oriented state of a liquid crystalline compound is capable of being controlled by an irradiation of light. The photo-responsive liquid crystal composition is composed of a liquid crystalline compound and a gelling agent mixed with the liquid crystalline compound to form a gelling mixture, wherein the liquid crystalline compound is capable of being controlled in a state orientated in one direction by the irradiation of light. In the photo-responsive liquid crystal composition, the liquid crystalline compound is oriented in a direction parallel to the direction of the irradiation of light. In the photo-responsive liquid crystal composition, the gelling agent is formed of a compound having an azobenzene structural part and a specific skeletal structure.

    • Disclosed is a photo-responsive liquid crystal composition which is composed of a liquid crystalline compound and a gelling agent, an information-recording medium and an information-recording process making use of the information-recording medium. The gelling agent consists of a photochromic compound having a group capable of forming an intermolecular hydrogen bond in its molecule as well as a photo-responding site of a specific structure. The composition can exist in any state of gel of a first phase and gel of a second phase and can undergo changes in state between the gel of the first phase and the gel of the second phase. The information-recording medium has a recording layer formed of the composition, and the information-recording process utilizes changes in state between the gel phases in the recording layer.
