    • When an L*a*b* value of a certain color is outside a target color gamut to be converted, it is judged whether the L*a*b* value is located within the range of the color gamut set under a predetermined condition. This set range is a range in which the accuracy is degraded if colors are converted using only a first method, for example, a range in the neighborhood of the color gamut. If a color to be converted is located within the range, colors are converted using a second method. If the L*a*b* value of the color to be converted is outside of the set range, it is converted using the first method until the conversion result is contained within the range Then, the occurrence of both a problem which the first conversion method has for colors in the neighborhood of the color gamut when colors are converted and a problem which the second method has in the conversion of a color far from the color gamut can be suppressed.

    • A color picture processing method and a color picture processing apparatus by which the amount of picture data can be reduced without degrading the picture quality in accordance with the sensations of human beings and further reduction in amount of data can be realized by data compression without degrading the picture quality and besides extraction of a body, a color change and reduction in number of colors can be performed simply. The color picture processing apparatus comprises a color picture data inputting section, a category discrimination section for discriminating, from color picture data, color information based on categorical perception of human beings, a picture data conversion section for converting the color picture data, a region extraction section for specifying and extracting a partial region of a picture, a color changing section for changing some or all of colors of the picture, a data compression section for compressing the color picture data after the conversion, and a picture displayable data conversion section for converting the color picture data after the conversion into picture displayable data to be inputted to a picture displaying section using a table which indicates a corresponding relationship between the color information and the picture displayable data.

    • The present invention generally relates to processing of color images and more particularly to a method for smoothing a color boundary between an object and a background. A method for changing the color of an object against the color of a background to smooth the color boundary between the object and the background includes the steps of: identifying the color of the boundary part of the object as a boundary color; obtaining a mixing ratio for mixing the color of the object and the color of the background to produce the boundary color; changing the color of the object relative to the color of the background; and changing the boundary color while maintaining the mixing ratio substantially constant at the boundary part before and after the color change process.

    • Color data for a color image device having a first color range (gamut) are converted into color data for a color image device having a second color range (gamut). For preventing colors from being altered when color data are converted, first color data in the first color range (gamut) of the first image device is converted into corresponding colors by referring to a classification table representing the correspondence between colors determined based on human color perception and the first color data, and then the first color data is converted into second color data in the second color range (gamut) of the second image device with respect to each of the classified colors. Since each of the colors based on the human color perception is converted, colors are prevented from being altered due to the conversion. Because each of the colors of a color image is converted, the clearness of the color image will not be lost.
