摘要： PURPOSE:To develop a purifying method of exhaust gas capable of maintaining a high purifying ratio being practically allowable, even after duration at high temp., in purification of the exhaust gas under an excessive oxygen atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:In the method simultaneously purifying carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide in the exhaust gas under the excessive oxygen atmosphere and purifying the exhaust gas, the exhaust gas with excessive oxygen is purified by being brought into contact with an exhaust gas purifying catalyst formed by carrying at least one kind metal selected from among the groups of (i) Pt and/or Pd, (ii) Ba and (iii) alkali metal, Fe, Ni, Co and Mg, on a carrying body consisting of a porous body.

When SOX is to be removed from the absorbent 26, the air/fuel ratio of an exhaust gas flowing in the absorbent 26 is alternately switched between rich and lean, and the rich air/fuel ratio at that time is regulated to be 14 or lower. Further, the time when the ratio is rich is regulated to be nearly equal to or longer than that when the ratio is lean.
