    • PURPOSE:To independently control the particle diameter of a metal oxide powder to be produced over a wide range by controlling the supply of a combustion supporting gas in multiple stages to expand or contract the combustion flame. CONSTITUTION:A combustible gas and an initial combustion supporting gas (oxygen) are supplied to a metal powder burner 5 to form an ignition flame, and a metal powder dispersed in a carrier gas is introduced into the ignition flame to form an initial flame I/F close to the burner 5. A combustion supporting gas is then introduced from feed pipes 61a,...65a to form a successive and multistage combustion flame C/F in the extending direction of the initial flame I/F. In this case, the supply and flow rate of the combustion supporting gas from the feed pipes 61a,...65a are controlled to expand or contract the combustion flame, and the particle diameter of the metal oxide powder to be produced is controlled. The particle diameter of the powder is increased as the formed combustion flame is increased in length, and the particle diameter of the powder is increased as the temp. of the combustion flame is raised.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a quantitative analysis method for analyzing the amount of the unburnt substance remaining in metal oxide powder, capable of determining the amount of the unburnt substance remaining in the produced metal oxide powder, with ease, rapidity, low cost, and high accuracy, without using a time-consuming and expensive chemical analysis or instrumental analysis, etc. CONSTITUTION:In a quantitative analysis of the unburnt substance in the metal oxide powder produced by the manufacture of a metal oxide powder such that a metal powder is ignited so as to form a combustion flame followed by continuously oxidizing and burning the metal powder, the metal oxide powder is mixed with a solvent affinitive to it so as to prepare a suspension. The suspension is subjected to a dispersion processing by means of an ultrasonic cleaner, then being subjected to a classification processing by means of a centrifugal separator, followed by separating the suspension into the layer 11 consisting of a suspension containing the metal oxide powder and the solvent, the layer 12 consisting of the metal oxide powder, and the layer 13 consisting of an unburnt substance. The layer 13 consisting of the unburnt substance is visually compared with a standard specimen prepared in advance, so that the amount of the unburnt substance in the metal oxide powder is determined.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain transparent quartz glass free from bending, distortion, cracking, and foaming with excellent reproducibility in high yield by adding silica particles having a specified diameter to a mixture of the hydrolyzate sol of alkoxysilane by an acidic catalyst and the hydrolyzate sol by an alkaline catalyst, gelling, drying, and sintering the mixture. CONSTITUTION:1mol. of alkoxysilane such as tetramethoxysilane is dissolved in 2-20mol. of water and -10 mol. of the acidic catalyst consisting of an inorg. acid or an org. acid to obtain a sol (A). Meanwhile, 2-20mol. of water, 5-100mol. of solvent, 0.1-10mol. of NH3, and a requisite amt. of dopant are added to 1mol. of alkoxysilane, and the mixture is hydrolyzed at 0-50 deg.C to obtain a sol (B) contg. fine spherical silica particles. The sol (A) and the sol (B), wherein the content of silica is controlled to =100mu diameter are added to the mixed soln., and the mixture is gelled, dried while spending a long time, then sintered, and vitrified.
