摘要： PURPOSE: To improve the durability of an electrically heated metallic catalyst carrier by forming thermal expansion absorbing structure between a center electrode and a honeycomb body and between electrode lead-out material and a metallic outer cylinder. CONSTITUTION: An electrically heated metallic catalyst carrier 2 is formed of a cylindrical metallic foil laminated body (honeycomb body) obtained by superposing corrugated foil on metallic flat foil and winding them around a center electrode 6, a metallic outer cylinder (casing) with the honeycomb body mounted therein, and the like. Cushioning material 17 for relaxing the radial thermal stress of electrode lead-out material 12o is interposed between electrical insulating material holding the electrode lead-out material 12o, and a locking body 16. A reinforcing joint part 7a with a non-joint part 7o is formed at least at the exhaust gas inflow side end part of the inner peripheral part of the honeycomb body jointed to the center electrode 6 so as to relax the radial thermal stress caused by the thermal expansion difference between the center electrode 6 and the honeycomb body. The durability of the electrically heated metallic catalyst carrier can thereby be improved.

A plurality of joint parts 11a, 11b are formed in the case of forming the metallic foil laminate 2 in such a way as this method. In this case, when energizing the joint through brazing foils 12a, 12b, length of the brazing foils 12a, 12b is changed, so that distribution of a heat generation point is made dense in the peripheral part where amount of heat deprived to the atmosphere by heat transfer is large.
