    • PURPOSE:To obtain the title tough cellular body, useful as a catalyst carrier, filter, etc., and having a large effective volume without requiring a cushioning material, by forming a specific skin layer on the prescribed outer peripheral part of the cellular ceramic body having a three-dimensional network structure. CONSTITUTION:A binder, such as PVA or methyl cellulose, in an amount of 5-10wt.%, 2-3wt.% surfactant, dispersant, etc., and 50-100wt.% water are added to, e.g., a mixed powder containing MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2 for providing a cordierite structure by calcining or synthetic cordierite powder obtained by heating the mixed powder and powdering the resultant cordierite based ceramic. The obtained mixture is stirred and mixed to afford a ceramic slurry, which is then impregnated into a cylindrical polyurethane foam, etc., prepared by removing cellular films and having communicating cells. The excessive slurry is removed by an air gun, etc., to dry the foam. An inorganic nonwoven fabric, such as Al2O3 impregnated with the ceramic slurry is then wrapped around the foam, dried and calcined at 1,300-1,400 deg.C for about 7hr to provide the aimed cellular ceramic body of the three-dimensional network structure having a skin layer consisting of the inorganic fibers having internal communicating spaces on the outer peripheral part.

    • PURPOSE:To repeatedly use a porous sheet by covering the second end face of a ceramic substrate with a shielding sheet and then introducing a powdery ceramic blocking material in the vicinity of the second end face in the air passage hole through the small holes of the perforated sheet to block the air passage hole. CONSTITUTION:The first end face 12 of a ceramic substrate 1 divided with a thin filter partition and having many air passage holes 2 communicating both end faces is covered with a perforated sheet 4, a powdery ceramic blocking material 7 is introduced into the hole 2 through the small holes 40 of the sheet 4, and the material is solidified to block the end of the hole 2. In this hole end blocking process, the second end face 11 of the substrate 1 is covered with a shielding sheet 8, and then the material 7 is introduced in the vicinity of the second end face in the hole 2 through the small hole 40 of the sheet 4 to block the hole 2 on the second end face 11 side. As a result, the sheet can repeatedly be used, and the end face of the substrate is smoothed.
