CONSTITUTION:The exceeding a standard value of the irregular condition of a road surface, detected with a road surface condition detection means M2, causes the damping force characteristic of a shock absorber M1 to be switched with a damping force characteristic switching means M4. The standard range of the standard value and/or time until returning the damping force characteristic is set by a detected vehicle speed with a standard range-time setting means M5. The detection of the abnormality of a vehicle speed detection means M3 with an abnormality detection means M6 causes an abnormality treating means M7 to stop the switching with the damping force characteristic switching means M4, or to correct a standard range and/or time until returning damping force. This constitution can ensure steering stability even at the time of vehicle speed sensor failure.

CONSTITUTION:Road surface state detecting means M2a-M2d provided corre sponding to respective shock absorbers M1a-M1d detect a road surface state to transmit to a damping force characteristic switching means M3 and to a correcting means M4. The correcting means M4 obtains detection characteristics of the respective detecting means M2a-M2d on the basis of the respective road surface state detection values, and individually corrects reference values or the road surface state detection values of the damping force characteristic switching means M3a-M3d in accordance with the detection characteristics. The switching means M3a-M3d compares the reference values and the detection values based on the results to change over individually the damping force characteristics of the respective shock absorbers M1a-M1d. According to this constitution, riding comfortableness as well as maneuvering stability is improved.

In this manner, characteristics of the damping force, the spring constant, etc., of the left and right wheels are generally equalized, so that driving force and braking force become equal in left and right wheels to be able to obtain good stability of the vehicle.

And the allowable range of the size of the on-spring resonance component is operated by means of an allowable range operating means M5 according to a car speed, and at the same time, in the case of the extracted on-spring resonance component having become out of the allowable range, it is so arranged that the damping force degree of the shock absorber M2 is heightened by means of a high damping force maintaining means M6.
