    • PURPOSE:To surely prevent the blow-up of an engine and shock due to tie-ups by altering pressure control characteristics based on the detection of the blow-up of the engine and the tie-up of each friction engagement means when hydraulic pressure to be supplied to each friction engagement means is controlled by a pressure control mechanism. CONSTITUTION:In the automatic transmission A where friction engagement means 1 and 2 such as brakes, clutches and the like are engaged/disengaged by means of hydraulic pressure, and a plurality of steps of gear shifting are thereby obtained by altering a power transmitting path in a gear train, and hydraulic pressure to be supplied to each friction engagement means 1 and 2 is controlled by a pressure control mechanism 3 such as a pressure control valve and the like. In this case, the device is equipped with a speed change condition detecting means 5 detecting the blow-up of an engine E or the tie-up of each friction engagement means 1 and 2, which take place when clutch-to-clutch transmission section is actuated. The pressure characteristics of the pressure control mechanism 3 is altered by a pressure control characteristic alter means 6 in such a way that the engaging pressure of the friction engagement means 2 becomes high when the blow-up of the engine E is detected, and also in such a way that the engaging pressure of the friction engagement means 2 becomes low when tie-ups are detected.
