    • PURPOSE:To form double-layer diagonally vapor-deposited films having a double refracting function and liquid crystal orienting function by projecting a material for vapor deposition to a substrate from a diagonal direction, then moving the substrate and projecting the same material for vapor deposition further from a specific angle, thereby depositing the films by evaporation. CONSTITUTION:The material for vapor deposition from a vapor source 3 is projected to the substrate 1 from the diagonal direction to form the 1st diagonally vapor-deposited film on the substrate 1 surface in a vacuum vessel 5 of a vapor deposition device. Ta2O5, WO3, Mo2O3, Bi2O3, Nb2O3, ZnS, etc., are used for the above-mentioned material for vapor deposition. The substrate 1 and the vapor source 3 are then relatively moved so that the angle projected to the substrate 1 is set in a 45+ or -5 deg. vapor deposition direction with respect to the vapor deposition direction of the 1st diagonally vapor deposited film mentioned above. The same material as the above-mentioned material for vapor deposition is projected and deposited by evaporation on the substrate in this position to integrally form the 2nd diagonally vapor- deposited film on the 1st diagonally vapor-deposited film, by which the double-layer diagonally vapor-deposited films useful for a liquid crystal display element are obtd. The incident angle thetafor the vapor deposition of the above-mentioned material for vapor deposition is preferably 45-75 deg..

    • PURPOSE:To improve the durability by forming a protective layer on a boundary surface of a metallic reflecting member by laminating it with one substrate, and an adjacent member to an oblique vapor-deposited film of a liquid crystal element having an oblique vapor deposition film for varying the phase of a transmission light by 1/4 wavelength. CONSTITUTION:A light beam which is made incident on a liquid crystal layer 11 from a plate glass 1 side is brought to a linear polarization by the absorption in a liquid crystal layer 11. This polarized light receives circularly polarized light to the right/left by an oblique vapor-deposited film 7 and reflected by an Al reflecting mirror layer 4, inverts the direction of the circularly polarized light, transmits through the oblique vapordeposited vilm 7 again, made incident on the crystal layer 11 again in the direction orthogonal to the light beam which is brought to a linearly polarized light in the beginning and receives a light absorption, and by controlling a reflection factor of the incident light, a glareproof state is formed. In such a liquid crystal glare- proof mirror, it is prevent by a protective layer 5 that for instance, a proton H invades the oblique vapor-deposited film 7 from the Al reflecting layer, therefore, H react and become HXWO3, and it can be prevented that the vapor-deposition film is coloed to blue.

    • PURPOSE:To return intricate elliptically polarized light to complete linearly polarized light by laminating many thin inorg. films which are diagonally deposited by evaporation at every specified angle shifted in the intra-surface bearing of the substrate in the vapor deposition direction of the substrate by as much as the angle equal to the twist angle of a supertwisted nematic type liquid crystal element. CONSTITUTION:This phase compensation plate is formed by laminating the many thin inorg. films 8 which are diagonally deposited by evaporation at every specified angle shifted in the intra-surface bearing of the substrate in the vapor deposition direction of the substrate 2b by as much as the angle equal to the twist angle of the liquid crystal cell. Optical rotatory power can, therefore, be imparted in addition to double refractiveness to the compensation plate so that the plate has the optical properties equiv. to the optical properties of the supertwisted nematic (STN) type liquid crystal panel. The complete linearly polarized light is obtd. in this way from the transmitted light of the STN type liquid crystal panel. The complete phase compensation is thus possible and the coloration is entirely eliminated.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal element excellent in durability and visuality by unitedly forming a transparent electrode and a 1/4lambda phase difference plate by an oblique evaporation film. CONSTITUTION:The oblique evaporation film 5 having both the functions of the 1/4 (wavelength) phase plate and the transparent electrode is formed on the surface of one end face of a plane glass 2. Incident light beams from the side of the transparent base (plate glass) 1 to a liquid crystal layer 11 are straight polarized by absorption based upon the liquid crystal layer 11. Namely, incident light beams consisting of a component rectangular to the long axis direction of a dichromatic dye (guest) having orientation coincident with nematic liquid crystal (host) kept at a state that no electric field is not impressed to the liquid crystal layer are absorbed by an ITO film to be the transparent electrode and the evaporation film 5. The straight polarized light beams are circularly polarized in the clockwise or counterclockwise direction by the oblique evaporation film 5, reflected by an Al reflecting mirror face 20, reversed at its circular polarization direction, transmitted through the evaporation film 5 again, and then made incident upon the liquid crystal layer 11 again in the direction rectangular to the original straight polarized light to absorb the light. Thus, the reflection factor of the incident light beams is controlled to obtain glare shielding state.

    • PURPOSE:To provide excellent mechanical strength to a titled element and to prevent trouble such as exfoliation by forming a 1st diffused layer between a 1st layer and intermediate layer and a 2nd diffused layer between a 2nd layer and the intermediate layer. CONSTITUTION:The 1st layer 11 and 2nd layer 15 which are diagonally vapor deposited films are joined respectively via the 1st diffused layer 12 and the 2nd diffused layer 14 to the intermediate layer 13. Since the intermediate layer 13 is an isotropic transparent material, it exerts a less adverse influence on incident light and the effect of phase control is attained by the 1st layer 11 and the 2nd layer 15. Namely, the wavelength at which the light is circularly polarized is defined by the material quality of the 1st material and the 2nd material, the film thicknesses of the 1st layer 11 and the 2nd layer 15 and the angles at which the respective layers are deposited by evaporation. The intermediate layer 13 has the excellent mechanical strength and is securely joined to the 1st layer 11 and the 2nd layer 15 via the diffused layers 12, 14. The inter-layer exfoliation is thereby prevented and the element having the mechanical strength excellent as a whole is obtd.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the leakage of a suspension and the degradation of the function thereof when the element is damaged by providing a transparent resin layer embedded with microcapsules in which the dispersion media dispersed with polarizable materials are sealed and transparent base materials covering the surfaces of transparent electrodes. CONSTITUTION:This element consists of the transparent resin layer 6 embedded with the microcapsules 5 in which the dispersion media dispersed with the fine polarizable materials are sealed, a pair of the transparent electrodes 3, 4 formed on both the front and rear surfaces of the transparent resin layer 6, and a pair of the transparent base materials 1, 2 respectively covering the surfaces of the transparent electrodes 3, 4. A pair of the transparent base materials 1, 2 are, for example, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) films of 125mum thickness. The transparent electrodes 3, 4 consisting of ITO films of 1,000Angstrom thickness are formed by vapor deposition on the inner surfaces thereof. The transparent resin layer 6 embedded with the microcapsules 5 is joined on the surfaces of the transparent electrodes 3, 4 and is covered with the transparent base materials 1, 2. The transparent resin layer 6 protects the microcapsules 5 and, therefore, the leakage of the suspension is prevented even if the transparent base materials 1, 2 are damaged.
