摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform efficiently emission control of the harmful component of the low-temperature exhaust gas while raising the temperature of a large quantity of the exhaust gas to the catalyst activating temperature in a short time by compressing the exhaust gas discharged from an internal combustion engine so as to raise the temperature thereof, and bringing the temperature- raised exhaust gas into contact with the exhaust emission control catalyst. SOLUTION: The exhaust gas of a diesel engine 1 is joined in an exhaust manifold 10, and divided into two flow passages, and the exhaust gas discharged from each compressor 2 provided in these two flow passage are joined again, and flowed into an after-treatment catalyst 3. When the exhaust gas is flowed into a cylinder 20 through a flow passage flow control valve 16, an inlet passage 22 and an inlet valve 25, a piston 21 of the compressor 2 rises so as to compress the exhaust gas, and the exhaust gas is thereby heated at the activating temperature or more. Thereafter, an outlet valve 26 is opened, and the exhaust gas is flowed into the after-treatment catalyst 3 from the outlet passage 23. At this stage, temperature of the exhaust gas is lowered, but since it has a sufficient quantity of accumulated heat, NOx included in the exhaust gas is deoxidized for purifying.

SOLUTION: An exhaust gas purifying catalyst is used for oxidizing and purifying at least HC in exhaust gas containing oxygen excessively, and a carrier composed of transition metal oxide and rare earth elements and catalyst precious metals carried on the carrier are contained therein. The catalyst precious metals are presumed to be provided with positive charge by the combination of the transition metal oxide and rare earth elements, and it is also presumed that SO2 is hard to move close to the catalyst precious metals having positive charge, while HC is easy to move close to the catalyst precious metals having positive charge, by which the oxidization activities of HC are improved and also the oxidization of SO2 is controlled to prevent the formation of sulfate. Also the sulfate formation preventing effect is increased by the acidic treatment of the above-referred catalyst.

The reaction produced gas is ionized and accelerated in the analysis chamber 51 to reach an MCP via a flying time type mass analysis chamber. The mass is determined in accordance with the arrival time from the ionization to MCP and a relative quantity is measured based on the voltage. These measuring operations are executed by means of a digital oscilloscope and a measuring controller.

SOLUTION: This oxidation catalyst has a multi-chain structure clay mineral at least a part of which is non-crystallized by heat-treatment and a platinum metal carried by this clay mineral, and atoms with a ratio of 0.05-0.8 to the total number of atoms of those elements among Mg and/or Al, the constitutional elements of clay mineral are replaced with transition metal elements. Since a large amt. of transition metal elements are introduced, Mg and/or Al in the clay mineral is reduced, and the amt. of SO2 absorbed in the catalyst is decreased. Even though SO2 reacts with activated oxygen on Pt and changes to SO3 , it becomes SO2 again by being reduced on a large amt. of the existing transition metal elements, and then formation of sulfate is suppressed.

The heat-resistant inorg. oxide is composed of a double-chain structure type clay mineral made non-crystalline. Further, at least one kind of a metal selected from platinum, palladium and rhodium is supported on the surface part of the outside of the activated alumina powder. By this catalyst, a harmful component such as HC, CO or SOF can be removed.
