    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform efficiently emission control of the harmful component of the low-temperature exhaust gas while raising the temperature of a large quantity of the exhaust gas to the catalyst activating temperature in a short time by compressing the exhaust gas discharged from an internal combustion engine so as to raise the temperature thereof, and bringing the temperature- raised exhaust gas into contact with the exhaust emission control catalyst. SOLUTION: The exhaust gas of a diesel engine 1 is joined in an exhaust manifold 10, and divided into two flow passages, and the exhaust gas discharged from each compressor 2 provided in these two flow passage are joined again, and flowed into an after-treatment catalyst 3. When the exhaust gas is flowed into a cylinder 20 through a flow passage flow control valve 16, an inlet passage 22 and an inlet valve 25, a piston 21 of the compressor 2 rises so as to compress the exhaust gas, and the exhaust gas is thereby heated at the activating temperature or more. Thereafter, an outlet valve 26 is opened, and the exhaust gas is flowed into the after-treatment catalyst 3 from the outlet passage 23. At this stage, temperature of the exhaust gas is lowered, but since it has a sufficient quantity of accumulated heat, NOx included in the exhaust gas is deoxidized for purifying.
