    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To modulate the high-frequency output without changing the energy of electromagnetic waves by the modulation of an anode power source. SOLUTION: This power source is provided with an electron gun section constituted of a cathode electrode 2 and an anode electrode 3, a body section 6 having a cavity resonator generating a large-power high frequency via the interaction between the electron beam generated by the cathode electrode 2 and the magnetic field, and a collector section 13 collecting the electron beam after the electromagnetic waves generated by the body section 6 are outputted to the outside. A collector power source 33 applying a voltage to a collector section 13 and an anode power source 31 applying a voltage to the anode electrode 3 using the cathode electrode 2 as the reference potential respectively and a body power source 32 applying a voltage to the body section 6 using the anode power source 31 as a reference potential are independently formed respectively. The anode power source 31 has a function to modulate the output, and it modulates the high frequency outputted from a gyroton.

    • PURPOSE: To reduce unwanted modes generated at a higher-order mode oscillation to stabilize the oscillating operation and output of a gyrotron by forming a horizontal groove on the cylindrical inner surface of a cavity resonator over the whole circumference so as to be perpendicular to the cylindrical axis. CONSTITUTION: A horizontal groove 2 having a width longer than 1/4 wavelength of high frequency wave and a depth about 1/4 wavelength is provided on the inner surface of a cavity resonator 1, whereby the cavity resonator inner surface forms a 1/4 wavelength type modulator. Since the axial electric field is advanced to the groove 2, reflected by the bottom surface of the groove 2, and canceled with the electric field just advanced on the surface with 180 deg. phase slippage, the axial electric field is difficult to build up. The width of the groove 2 is set narrower than half wavelength, whereby the circumferential electric field can not be advanced into the groove, and can be built up without being canceled. Since the axial electric field on the resonator 1 surface can be thus selectively canceled, the generation of an unwanted mode having the axial electric field is suppressed, and a mode necessary for generation of electromagnetic wave can be efficiently generated.
