There fore, it is made possible to prevent securely the gas leakage from the end of the electrode 2 with rib and from the laminated surface with a gas separator plate 3 by the heatproof and electrolyte-resisting micropowder 7 and kneaded mixture 9 respectively to realize a long service life, and a fuel cell of an extremely high reliability can be produced.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the gas leakage from a gap securely and to realize a long service life, by applying a sealing material which consists of a composite of a mixture, made by mixing and kneading a graphite powder and a phosphoric acid solution, and of a florine resin tape, between the end of an electrode with rib and of a gas separator plate. CONSTITUTION:Between the end of an electrode 2 with rib and a gas separator plate 3, a mixture 5 made by mixing and kneading 30 to 60 wt% of a heatproof and electrolyte-resisting sealing graphite powder and 70 to 40 wt% of phosphoric acid, and a porous florine resin tape 6, a polytetrafluoroethylene tape, for example, are furnished as a sealing material. A phosphoric acid type fuel cell laminate is composed by laminating the electrodes with rib, the gas separator plates, cooling plates, and the like in multiple layers. In such a composition, the gas leakage is prevented securely, and a long service life can be realized.

    • PURPOSE:To improve gas sealing structure at the edge of electrode to increase reliability by installing a sealing groove in parallel with a passage of fluid at the edge of an electrode with rib, and forming a gas sealing part by impregnating a resin having heat resistance, electrolyte resistance, high melting point, and high decomposition temperature into the sealing groove and solidifying the resin. CONSTITUTION:A flat plate is formed by binding carbon fibers with phenol resin, and carbonization and graphitization treatments are applied to the plate to obtain a carbon fiber porous plate. Fluid passages 4 are formed on one side of the porous plate and a sealing groove 7 is formed in parallel with the fluid passage 4 on the outside of the fluid passage 4. Polytetrafluoroethylene powder is filled in the sealing groove 7 and heated at 350 deg.C under a vacuum of 10mmHg to form a gas sealing part. When a fuel cell is constructed with the electrode with rib having this gas sealing structure, internal heat generation and decrease in effective reaction gas caused by defective gas sealing part are reduced.

    • PURPOSE:To increase sealing capability by arranging a sealing member comprising a kneaded mixture of graphite and fluorine oil, and a fluorine resin tape between the end of a rib-installed electrode placed on one side of a matrix and a gas separating plate. CONSTITUTION:A pair of rib-installed electodes 2 in which gas passages are formed are palced on both sides of a matrix 1 into which electrolyte is impregnated to form a unit cell. A plurality of unit cells are stacked through a gas separating plate 3 to form a fuel cell. A sealing member comprising a kneaded mixture 5 of 30-60 wt% graphite powder and 70-40 wt% fluorine oil, and a fluorine resin tape 6 is placed between the end of the rib-installed electrode 2 and the gas separating plate 3 before the fuel cell is assembled. Thereby, elasticity and adhesion between the end of the electrode and the gas separating plate are increased. Therefore, gas leakage from the end space is surely prevented and the life of the fuel cell is lengthened.
