    • A transmission arrangement for an engine driven vehicle having two continuously variable transmissions serving to drive left and right hand vehicle wheels at separately variable drive ratios. Each transmission incorporates a variator of the type in which a net torque applied to the variator through its input and output is referred to a ratio control part, which may be formed as a control lever, whose position governs the transmission's drive ratio. The control parts of the variators are each operatively coupled to a driver's speed control, such that the speed control determines a mean position of the two control parts. However they are both also able to move relative to the mean position, under the influence of the torque they react. Additionally the control parts are coupled to each other such that any displacement of one control part from the mean position is accompanied by an opposite displacement of the other control part. In this way the transmissions are enabled to the relative speeds of the driven vehicle wheels automatically to reduce or even eliminate wheel slip, whilst still providing the driver with control over overall vehicle speed.

    • A multi-regime continuously variable ratio transmission system has coaxial system input and output shafts (16, 24), a continously variable ratio transmission unit (V) connected coaxially to the system input shaft (16) and having a coaxial variator output shaft (18) and a mixing epicyclic gear train (E1) having an input sun gear (S1) drivably connected to the variator ouput shaft (18), a planet carrier (C1) drivably connected to the system input shaft (16) and a planet gear (P1) mounted on the planet carrier ((C1). The planet gear (P1) drives a first intermediate output shaft (22) arranged coaxially with the system input shaft (16) and selectively connectable to the system output shaft via a first clutch (H) in high-regime operation of the transmission. The planet gear (P1) also provides the input for a second epicyclic gear train (E2) having an output (C2) which is selectively connectable to the system output shaft via a braking element (L) for low-regime operation of the transmission. The arrangement minimises the number of gear meshes, thereby minimising transmission losses and the absence of an annulus in the mixing epicyclic gear train (E1) allows more freedom in the choice of gear sizes, thereby permitting reduced gear speeds.

    • A continuously-variable ratio transmission comprising a ratio-varying unit ('variator'), and an epicyclic unit having three outputs arranged concentrically. Two of those outputs are connected respectively in fixed ratio to opposite ends of the variator, so that as the variator ratio changes, the speed of one of these outputs always rises and that of the other falls. These two outputs are also connected by appropriate gearing and clutches to the CVT output shaft. Successive regimes of operation, so extending the overall ratio range of the CVT, are obtained by alternatively connecting each of the two epicyclic outputs to the CVT output. Ratios and other parameters are chosen so that regime changes are synchronous.
