    • PURPOSE:To make a response to the lowering of detection sensitivity, by detecting variations in impedance between electrodes which are divided into a plurality of unit electrodes and attached onto the back of a dielectric body at specified intervals therebetween to generate an abnormality signal when the variations exceed a fixed limit range. CONSTITUTION:A case 1 is mounted to a bonnet of an automobile with window sections 1a and 1b forward. Rectangular plate shaped dielectric bodies 7 and 7 are arranged in a case 1 facing windows 1a and 1b and electrodes 8 and 9 divided into respective unit electrodes are attached onto the backs of the dielectric bodies 7 and 7. Variations in the impedance between the electrodes 8 and 9 corresponding to the amount of rain drops attached are detected with a detection circuit 13 and applied to a microcomputer 32 of a control circuit 30 as a frequency signal Sf. On the basis of the signal Sf, the computer 32 controls a relay 35 for switching the expanded wiping mode of a wiper and a relay 36 for controlling the driving of the wiper while an abnormality signal S3 is outputted when the frequency increment of the signal Sf exceeds a set limit range. The signal S3 enables a countermeasure against the decrease of the detection sensitivity.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous detection due to the movement of the rain drops along a dielectric body, by arranging comb-tooth shaped unit electrodes attached onto the back of a dielectric body that those sandwiched by other unit electrodes are given a shape having a specified detection gap with respect to other unit electrodes adjoining on both sides thereof. CONSTITUTION:A case 1 is mounted on a bonnet of an automobile with window sections 1a and 1b forward. Rectangular plate shaped dielectric bodies 7 and 7 are arranged in the case 1 facing the window sections 1a and 1b and electrodes 8 and 9 are attached onto the back of dielectric bodies 7 and 7. The electrodes 8 and 9 are divided into comb-tooth pattern shaped unit electrodes 8a, 8b and 8c and 9a, 9b and 9c and the electrodes 8a-8c and 9a-9c are meshed with a gap (G). Among the electrodes 8a-8c and 9a-9c those 8b, 8c and 9a, 9b sandwiched by other unit electrodes extend electrode pointers both to the right and left to be given a shape with the clearance (G) with respect to other unit electrode adjoining on both sides thereon. Thus, rain drops are detected from changes in the electrostatic capacitance between the electrodes 8 and 9, thereby preventing erroneous detection.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the durability of an apparatus, by attaching first and second electrodes which are divided into a plurality of unit electrodes on the back of a dielectric body formed like a plate at a specified interval therebetween to detect changes in the electrostatic capacity due to rain drops attached onto the surface of the electric body. CONSTITUTION:A case 1 is mounted on a bonnet of an automobile with window sections 1a and 1b forward. Rectangular plate shaped dielectric bodies 7 and 7 are arranged in the case 1 facing the window sections 1a and 1b and electrodes 8 and 9 are attached onto the back of the dielectric bodies 7 and 7. The electrodes 8 and 9 are divided into unit electrodes 8a, 8b and 8c and 9a, 9b and 9c and the electrodes 8a-8c are faced with 9a-9c at a specified interval therebetween. A rain drop sensor 12 is formed with the case 1, the dielectric body 7 and the electrodes 8 and 9 and changes in the electrostatic capacity between the electrodes 8 and 9 according to the attachment of rain drops to the surface of the dielectric body 7 are inputted into a detection circuit through external capacitor, thereby enabling higher durability of a rain drop detector.
