    • A bearing system (A) that supports a shaft (4) in a housing (2) includes two single row tapered roller bearings (6, 8) mounted in opposition. One of the bearings (8) compensates for thermal variations that would otherwise produce excessive preload in the system. It has a conventional cup (48) in the housing and tapered rollers (52) arranged in a single row along the raceway (54) of the cup. It also has a compensating assembly (50, 100, 110, 120, 130) on the shaft, and it includes a ribless cone (60) having a raceway (70) around which the rollers are organized, an axially displaceable rib ring (64) for positioning the rollers, a spring (66) for urging the rib ring against a stop surface (74) on the cone, and a compensating ring (68) formed from a material having a high coefficient of thermal expansion for displacing the rib ring against the force exerted by the spring when the temperature of the compensating assembly exceeds a prescribed set point temperature so as to reduce preload in the bearing system.

    • A bearing actuator module comprises a support bearing assembly having a mounting ring (1) adapted to be mounted to an application support structure; a rotatable gear (G2) received within the mounting ring for rotation relative to said mounting ring. A drive subassembly (DS) which rotates said rotatable gear (G2) is removably received in the support bearing assembly. The drive subassembly comprises a stationary gear (G1), a plurality of pinion assemblies, each of which comprises a first pinion P1 which meshes with the gear G1 and a second pinion which meshes with the gear G2. The pinion assemblies are mounted in a carrier (10), which is rotated by a motor (M). A brake assembly (B) is provided to prevent rotation of the rotatable gear (G2) when the motor is not activated. Additionally, a feed back or position sensor is provided which indicates the relative rotational position of the carrier (and hence of the rotatable gear (G2)).

    • An epicyclic drive (A) has its planet gears (6) integrated into separately built planet assemblies (B). Each planet assembly (B), in addition to its planet gear (6), includes a pin (34) which extends through the planet gear (6) and an antifriction bearing (36) located between the gear (6) and the pin (34). The outer raceways (72, 74) for the bearing (36) are machined into the gear (6), whereas the inner raceways (52, 54) are machined into the pin (34). The bearing (36) also has rolling elements (82) organized in two rows between the inner and outer raceways. The pins (34) have mounting ends (40, 42) which lie beyond the ends of the planet gear (6) to anchor the planet assembly (B) in a carrier (8). The bearing (36), inasmuch as it is assembled separately, is set with considerable precision, preferably in preload, so the planet gear (6) does not skew with respect to sun gear (2) and ring gears (4) with which it meshes during operation at the epicyclic drive (A).
