摘要： A public wireless LAN (11) permits receipt of non-authentication traffic, such as access information requests, from a mobile wireless communications device (121) prior to device authentication by partially opening a controlled port within an access point (181). The wireless LAN re-directs such non-authentication traffic received at the AP from the mobile wireless communications to a local web server (21). The local web server provides reply to the mobile wireless communications device, enabling a determination by the device whether or not to request access. The device seeks access by way of an access request received at the AP. In response, the AP re-directs the access request through an uncontrolled port in the AP to an access server (26) that authenticates device. Upon successful device authentication, the AP fully opens its controlled port to permit the exchange of traffic through that port with the mobile wireless communications device.

摘要： A user (12 1 , 12 2 ) can access a Local Area Network (LAN) (20) on a fee basis without risking transmission of an un-encrypted PIN at upon initial access. The user initially sends a request to the LAN identifying a Billing Agent (26) that maintains an account associated with the user for payment of LAN access charges. Upon successful authentication, the Billing Agent authorizes the LAN to grant access to the user, allowing the user to connect via the LAN to a private network (14) or a public network (16).

摘要： An operator of a network (20) dynamically establishes a business relationship with a Billing Agent (26) to enable the network operator to receive reimbursement for access charges incurred by one or more users (121, 122 and 123). To establish such a relationship, the network operator first opens a communications channel to the Billing Agent after which the network operator and Billing Agent verify each other. Following verification, the network operator communicates proposed business terms and conditions, including access charges, to the Billing Agent. In response, the Billing Agent sends to the network operator an acceptance of business terms acceptable to the Billing Agent. After reaching agreement on the terms and conditions, the Billing Agent and network operator will each digitally acknowledge a formal agreement that embodies the agreed upon terms.

摘要： A user can gain access a Local Area Network (LAN) on a fee basis without the risk of having to transmit an un-encrypted PIN at upon initial access. The user initially sends a request to the LAN identifying a Billing Agent that maintains an account associated with the user for payment of LAN access charges. In practice, the account can be take the form of a pre-paid account identified only by a PIN known to the user. After the user has identified the Billing Agent, the LAN queries the Billing Agent for its digital certificate, which the LAN forwards to the user. The user utilizes the certificate to encrypt a PIN for transmission via the LAN to the Billing Agent for authentication. 摘要： A wireless Local Area Network (10) provides data service through a data LAN (14) and also provides video broadcast service through a video LAN (26). A wireless LAN subscriber accesses the video LAN through one of a plurality of Video Access Points (VAPs) (281 and 282) that broadcast multiple video programs on a channel having a frequency different than the frequency over which the subscriber accesses the data LAN. Each VAP maintains the video channel in a one-way broadcast-only mode to prevent a wireless LAN subscriber from seeking to uplink information on that channel. In this way, the wireless LAN can employ a common protocol for both data and video transmission, and deliver the video streams at the maximum permissible downlink transmission rate.

Upon receipt of the identity information, a wireless LAN Access Server (24) in the wireless telephony network identifies a Serving General Packet Radio Service Serving Node (SGSN) (18) that had last served the wireless terminal in the wireless telephony network prior to transition. The wireless LAN Access Server forwards the identity information to the SGSN, which, in turn, provides an identification response for validating the terminal.

摘要： Secure access by a mobile wireless terminal (14) of a wireless telephony network (10) is achieved by having a Home Location Register (30) store the terminal's temporary and permanent identities. Upon accessing the network following initial registration, the terminal sends a temporary identity to a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) (201 and 202). If no serving node in the network knows the terminal, the terminal need not sent its permanent identity in clear as was previously required. Rather, the serving node need only query the HLR since the HLR can map the terminal's temporary identity to its permanent identity. In this way, the permanent identity of the mobile wireless terminal remains secure.

摘要： A method for Authentication Authorization and Accounting (AAA) in an interworking between first and second networks that do not belong in the same administrative domain, using certificate based transactions. In the method according to the invention, the second network sends a public key to the first network, and a certificate to a mobile device. The certificate includes information regarding the subscription level of the mobile device and is signed with a private key of the second network. Upon detection of the first network the mobile device transmits the certificate and the first network authenticates the certificate using the public and private keys of the second network, and authorizes access to the network in response. The first network then sends a session key encrypted with a public key of the mobile device. The mobile device decrypts the session key with a private key and access the first network using the session key. In this manner, interworking is implemented without requiring the deployment of a special interworking function to bridge between the two different types of networks.

A layer of video program (310) that has been encoded into multiple layers is downloaded via the first or second network (210 or 220). The downloaded video program (310) is displayed at a playback rate that corresponds to a display quality. Excess portion (320) of the downloaded video program that result when a rate at which the video program is displayed are buffered. The number of layers being downloaded and the playback rate at which the video program is displayed are increased (330) to increase the display quality, when the buffered excess portions exceeds a threshold level (325).
