    • A Asymmetric Data over Coaxial (ADoC) dual mode device provides support for both wired and wireless modes of operation, and can switch between these two modes periodically. In ADoC (wired) mode, the dual mode device operates as ADoC Station while in WLAN (wireless) mode, it operates as WLAN Access Point. In one particular implementation, a communication unit (3100, 3104, 3106) is configured for communicating over multiple media including a wireless medium and a wired medium, the communication unit being operable (1) in a wireless mode for communicating over a wireless medium using a wireless protocol, and (2) in a wired mode for communicating over the wired medium using a variation of the wireless protocol. The implementation also includes a switch (3104) to switch the communication unit between the wireless mode and the wired mode.

    • An implementation provides sporadic uplink traffic transmission in a data over fixed line environment. A polling time slot can be added to the TDF superframe and can enable an access point to poll stations to determine whether an uplink channel for supporting sporadic user controlling messages (e.g., video on demand) over a cable access network. Such an implementation may eliminate the need for the TDF stations (STAs) to register with and request an uplink channel to the access point for receiving the sporadic user controlling messages. In an implementation, a frame structure (2100) is used for communication. The frame structure supports at least two communication modes. The communication modes include a time division mode in which a slot in the frame structure is reserved for a device and a polling mode in which a polling slot in the frame structure is used by multiple devices for data communication.

One encapsulation process receives (1130, 1820) a packet from a first source and a packet from a second source. The two packets have a particular format. One extraction process receives (1620, 1920) an encapsulated packet having a given format.
