    • Efficient and reliable FEC frame header improvements suitable for headers for data packets in a digital cable television transmission system are provided. In one embodiment, the DVB-C2 Standard, Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) or Variable Coding and Modulation (VCM) is applied to each FEC block to provide as much flexibility as possible. As a result, a frame header is attached in front of each FEC frame to inform the coding rate, modulation type and physical layer pipe identifier. Besides the signaling of physical layer related information, the FEC frame header has to provide a structure so that it can be easily and reliably detected in the receiver. A frame header for Forward Error Correction (FEC) encoded frames is designed for use in the DVB-C2 Standard with an extra bit to convey additional information. The FEC frame block can also include the FEC header for the subsequent FEC data block to increase robustness. The power level of the FEC header can also be increased relative to the data portion. Different modulation methods can be used for the FEC frame header depending on the modulation method used for the FEC frame data portion. These techniques increase the flexibility and robustness of FEC header detection.

    • A DMB-T receiver supports a single carrier (SC) form of modulation and a multi-carrier form of modulation such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Upon receiving a broadcast signal, the DMB-T receiver downconverts the received broadcast signal to a received base-band signal and determines a frame number for each frame by correlating groups of the received symbols in adjacent signal frames. In particular, the receiver determines a maximum right-shift correlation value and a maximum left-shift correlation value. If the magnitude of the maximum right-shift correlation value is greater than, or equal to, the magnitude of the maximum left-shift correlation value, then the maximum right shift correlation value is used to retrieve a frame number from a look-up table. Otherwise, the negative value of the maximum left-shift correlation value is used to retrieve a frame number from the look-up table.

    • Methods and apparatus for using 802.11 Wireless LANs in TV white space that allow networks with overlapping wireless regions to coexist. The methods and apparatus offer a solution to the mutated hidden node problem. Wireless devices communicate with a coexistence manager over a backhaul connection. Signals are sent by a low power station indicating a request to use a portion of spectrum. The coexistence manager communicates with a plurality of second stations that transmit at a higher power level. The plurality of second stations either send a signal to the first station indicating that it can transmit, or send signals so that the first station can determine which interference it is receiving, after which the coexistence manager tells the interfering station to transmit a signal to the first station indicating when it can transmit.

    • Methods and apparatus for spectrum sensing for FM wireless microphone signals are provided. The spectrum sensing algorithm developed makes use of the property that the autocorrelation function of an FM signal is a sinusoidal function provided that the frequency deviation is much smaller than the carrier frequency and the correlation delay is small. Based on this property, a simple spectrum sensing algorithm for the FM signal is designed by computing the autocorrelation function of the received signal and matched filtering of the sinusoidal function. The spectrum sensor provided by this approach can reliably detect the target signals when a strong adjacent channel interference exists and the signal power is as low as -114 dBm.

    • Methods and apparatus for spectrum sensing for the presence of ATSC digital television signals and NTSC analog television signals in the VHF/UHF TV bands are provided. Similar time-domain signal structures for the ATSC and NTSC signals are used to perform spectrum sensing. For ATSC digital television signals, a Segment-Sync based spectrum sensing method is provided, based upon the correlation of Segment Sync symbols inserted in the beginning of each data segment. Additionally, a general adjacent channel interference alleviation scheme by using a narrower receiver filter is also provided. For NTSC analog TV signals, a horizontal-sync based spectrum sensing method is provided which is based upon the correlation of horizontal sync signals present at the beginning of each line of an NTSC analog TV signal. The proposed spectrum sensors can reliably detect the target signals when a strong adjacent channel interference exists and the signal power is as low as dBm as set in FCC test models.
