    • The invention relates to a method for packet-switching transmission of media data and a device for processing media data. Media data may be video, audio or text data, or other data. Transmission of the data is usually effected according to a streaming method. The data is therein transmitted in packets and re-assembled in the receiving device. For Internet applications, the real-time transport protocol is very widely used in the transmission of data streams. However, this data transmission protocol does not enable a secure transmission which is based on a repetition of the defectively transmitted data. Sequence counters are used according to this protocol so that left- out data packets can be detected in the receiving device. According to the invention, it is provided that error information data is inserted in the destination media data record which is generated from the received data in the receiving device when, according to the transmission protocol, transmission errors are detected in the analysis of the data packets received. The transmission errors are then documented in the destination data record. The stored error information can be analyzed upon reproduction of the destination data record so that it can be evaluated, in particular, whether the recorded original data is so seriously defective that a new recording is inevitable. In particular, this is advantageous in video production where it is necessary to quickly evaluate whether a recorded film or video scene is of acceptable quality (if necessary, taking potential retouching into account) or whether it must be repeated and recorded again.

    • A method for converting video data comprises providing video data in a first format, selecting consecutive pixel data corresponding to a line or fraction of a line of an image, and adapting a maximum length of a data packet to accommodate the selected pixel data. The payload section of a data packet exclusively carries pixel data originating from one single line of the source image. The method further comprises calculating a start address for a memory in a receiver beginning at which address the pixel data is to be written. The start address is added to a header section of the data packet in the transmitter. The data packet is transmitted via a network. In the receiver the pixel data is written to the memory beginning at the start address indicated in the header section. Video data is read from the target memory in accordance with a second format.

    • The present invention relates to a method of managing a packet administration map for data packets to be received via a network, particularly for packet groups organized in sequences of consecutive packets. In the field of networking and reliable data transport, as for example in case of TCP, bursty packet drops occur during a data transmission. Especially in high speed networks like in 10 Gb Ethernet, the handling of lost and retransmitted packets can introduce a disproportionate decrease of the net data rate. A reliable transport protocol usually retransmits a data packet that a receiver was not able to receive and thus was not acknowledged. In order to manage data packets that are retransmitted, a receiver in the network monitors sequence numbers and stores missing sequence numbers within an internal data structure, called packet administration map. According to the invention a reversed keying is used which means that the upper limit of the range of contiguous missing data packets is used as the key entry in the administration map. As the retransmitted packets usually are retransmitted in an increasing order of sequence numbers, with the help of the invention it becomes very seldomly necessary to split a packet administration entry or to create a new packet administration entry.
