The electrolyte comprises a lithium salt preferably lithium iodide (LiI) dissolved in an organic solvent mixture. The solvent mixture preferably comprises dioxolane, dimethoxyethane and sulfolane. The electrolyte typically contains between about 100 and 2000 parts by weight water per million parts by weight (ppm) electrolyte therein. A cathode slurry is prepared comprising iron disulfide powder, carbon, binder, and a liquid solvent. The mixture is coated onto a conductive substrate and solvent evaporated leaving a dry cathode coating on the substrate. The anode and cathode can be spirally wound with separator therebetween and inserted into the cell casing with electrolyte then added.

摘要： Primary lithium cells are provided, the cells having an anode comprising lithium and a cathode comprising iron disulfide. Features of the cells are optimized in order to enhance the cell performance within the constraints imposed by the maximum permitted level of lithium and standard cell dimensions. In a first aspect of the invention the electrolyte of the cell comprises a lithium salt, 1, 3-dioxolane, a glycol diether, and water. In another aspect of the invention the cell comprises a PTC device (54) having an internal hole diameter (56) of less than 5 mm. In a further aspect of the invention the cell comprises an anode tab (18), configured to establish electrical connection between the anode (40) and the can (20), the anode tab being welded to the can, and a cathode tab (58) being welded to the cap assembly. In a last aspect of the invention at least a portion of each of the cathode and anode tabs of the cell is covered with an insulating tape.

The anode and cathode can be spirally wound with separator therebetween and inserted into the cell casing with electrolyte then added.
