    • For managing a traffic overload in a software defined network (70) having an SDN controller (10), when an indication of a traffic overload is received (200), there are steps of identifying (208) traffic flows which contribute to this, identifying (210) nodes (20, 21, 22) of the network controllable by the SDN controller and located along a path of the identified traffic flows before the location of the traffic overload. The SDN controller is used to control (220) the identified nodes to control the identified traffic flows to reduce the traffic overload. By using the SDN controller to control the reduction compared to diverting suspicious traffic flows to a separate external security server, the extra network resources used for carrying the diverted traffic flows are not needed, the separate security server is not needed, and the risk of such diverted traffic flows themselves causing overloads is reduced. It can be applicable to a range of causes of overload, including denial of service attacks.

    • This invention relates to a unit (200) and a system (290) for protection switching of line cards (270,280) in a telecommunication system. Known solutions implement a so called protection bus which has several disadvantages. It does for example not allow for different simultaneous protection switching configurations. The current invention overcomes these disadvantages and comprises a protection unit (200) connectable between the communication lines (250) and the line interface unit (270). The protection unit (200) is interconnected with other protections units (210,220) with detachable electrical connection elements (251,252) to form a protection switching system (290). One protection unit (210) in the protection switching system (290) is connectable to a standby line card (260). The protection switching system (290) is adapted so that when protection switching is needed the line signal is re-directed between the communication line (240) for a failed line card (280) and the standby line card (260) via the electrical connection elements (251,252).
