    • A method and apparatus adapted to adjust threshold values for initiating HO measurements based on terminal or user equipment (UE) performance. The threshold values for initiating the HO measurements and for executing the HO may be determined by the network. Prior to determining whether to proceed with these procedures, the thresholds are adjusted, based on the actual UE performance. This adjustment is achieved by applying an offset in dB that captures the effective SIR improvement of the advanced receiver compared to the standard receiver used to set the thresholds. The offset depends on, among other things, the receiver type used, the number of receiver antennas, the multi-path channel profile, the number of active radio links, and the services/connection modes that are currently active in the UE.

    • In one or more embodiments, a receiver circuit generates impairment correlation estimates for a desired signal that are compensated for the use of different transmission scrambling codes in transmitting the desired signal and an associated pilot signal. In one embodiment, an impairment correlation estimation method comprises determining impairment correlation estimates from a pilot signal in a received CDMA signal, adapting the impairment correlation estimates for scrambling code effects if the desired signal and pilot signal are transmitted under different transmission scrambling codes, and performing one or more signal processing operations with respect to the desired signal based on the impairment correlation estimates. For example, in at least one embodiment, the receiver circuit is configured to compensate elements of an impairment correlation matrix that correspond to signal delays of the desired signal based on transmit power allocation differences between pilot and desired signal scrambling codes.

    • A sequence of received signals is identified, by a receiver of signals transmitted via a channel of a wireless communications system, as one of a number of known orthogonal sequences. The sequence of received signals is received (103); a modified sequence is calculated (105) by replacing some of the received signals by their complex conjugate values; the modified sequence is correlated (106) with each one of the number of known orthogonal sequences to obtain a correlation result for each of the known sequences; and the sequence of received signals is identified (107) as the known sequence having the largest correlation result. When some signals in the received sequence are complex conjugated before being correlated with the known sequences, the correlation sum will increase so that even in case of a considerable frequency error the correlation sum for the correct sequence will be sufficiently large to be distinguished from noise.

    • Receiver resources are allocated based on how subframes are allocated within in a frame between downlink and uplink transmissions and how often the receiver is expected to report feedback information associated with the downlink transmissions. Additional time is available for processing received data blocks if the feedback information derived from those blocks must be reported later than expected due to the unavailability of uplink subframes. According to one embodiment, received signals are processed by receiving transmission configuration information indicating how downlink and uplink subframes are allocated within a frame in the time domain. Based on the transmission configuration information, the receiver determines whether a delay that exceeds a feedback reporting interval assigned to the receiver will occur when reporting feedback information associated with the downlink subframes. Receiver resources are allocated based on whether a delay will occur when reporting the feedback information.

    • Timing alignment of User Equipment (UE) in a communications system is maintained by measuring an environmental condition of the UE, and determining a present magnitude of change metric representing a present magnitude of change of the environmental condition relative to a baseline value. The present magnitude of change metric is combined with a previous accumulation metric to obtain a present accumulation metric. If it is detected that the present accumulation metric satisfies a predetermined relationship with respect to the threshold value (e.g., is greater than the threshold value), then the UE transmits a timing advance request. An environmental condition can be, for example, a Doppler shift of a received signal, a Received Signal Strength Indication from a received signal, a temperature within the UE, a humidity within the UE, a supply voltage of the UE, or a symbol timing of a received signal.

    • A method performed by a mobile communication unit (10) when operating in stand-by mode in a wireless cellular communication network. The receiver is activated in periods of relatively short duration (τ o ) to receive paging indicators (21) from the serving base station (20) and to receive identifying signals from the remote base station (30). After the first period a likelihood is assessed that a remote cell has been detected, and following the first period the receiver is activated in a second period of a duration (τ 1 ) depending an the assessed likelihood. If a remote cell has likely been detected, the second duration is longer than the first duration. Most of its stand-by time the mobile terminal will not detect a new cell, and most of the periods with the receiver activated will therefore be of the short first duration, the Power consumption of the receiver will be correspondingly reduced, and the stand-by time is correspondingly increased.
