    • A frequency error of received signals in an OFDM receiver of a wireless communications system is determined. Symbols of a given duration are transmitted as cells on sub-carrier frequencies; and some of the cells are pilot cells modulated with reference information. The method comprises the steps of selecting at least three pilot cells (p 0 , p 1 , p 2 ) from different symbols and different sub-carriers; determining the symbol and the sub-carrier on which each pilot cell is transmitted; determining for each pilot cell a phase difference between received and generated signals; calculating therefrom a change in phase difference (Φ x ) caused by the frequency error; and calculating the frequency error from the calculated change in phase difference (Φ x ). In this way a receiver capable of determining a frequency error also in situations where only a short data burst, such as a single resource block, is available for the estimation is provided.

    • Ascertaining which one of a number of cells of a cellular communication system transmitted an OFDM signal involves obtaining reference symbols from the OFDM signal. Compensating phase shift values for phase aligning the plurality of reference symbols are estimated and used to generate phase corrected reference symbols. At least two scrambling code sequences are applied to the phase corrected reference symbols to obtain at least two de-scrambled phase corrected reference symbol sequences, wherein each of the scrambling codes is associated with a respectively different one of the cells of the cellular communication system. A power value of each of the de-scrambled phase corrected reference symbol sequences is ascertained. That one of the scrambling codes that is associated with a highest one of the power values is ascertained, thereby ascertaining which one of the number of cells of the cellular communication system transmitted the OFDM signal.

    • A sequence of received signals is identified, by a receiver of signals transmitted via a channel of a wireless communications system, as one of a number of known orthogonal sequences. The sequence of received signals is received (103); a modified sequence is calculated (105) by replacing some of the received signals by their complex conjugate values; the modified sequence is correlated (106) with each one of the number of known orthogonal sequences to obtain a correlation result for each of the known sequences; and the sequence of received signals is identified (107) as the known sequence having the largest correlation result. When some signals in the received sequence are complex conjugated before being correlated with the known sequences, the correlation sum will increase so that even in case of a considerable frequency error the correlation sum for the correct sequence will be sufficiently large to be distinguished from noise.

    • Receiver resources are allocated based on how subframes are allocated within in a frame between downlink and uplink transmissions and how often the receiver is expected to report feedback information associated with the downlink transmissions. Additional time is available for processing received data blocks if the feedback information derived from those blocks must be reported later than expected due to the unavailability of uplink subframes. According to one embodiment, received signals are processed by receiving transmission configuration information indicating how downlink and uplink subframes are allocated within a frame in the time domain. Based on the transmission configuration information, the receiver determines whether a delay that exceeds a feedback reporting interval assigned to the receiver will occur when reporting feedback information associated with the downlink subframes. Receiver resources are allocated based on whether a delay will occur when reporting the feedback information.
