    • A joint demodulator is configured to generate an estimated first frequency or first frequency error for the first signal and an estimated second frequency or second frequency error for the second signal. A first long-term automatic frequency control is responsive to the estimated first frequency or first frequency error, wherein the joint demodulator is responsive to the first long-term automatic frequency control. A second long-term automatic frequency control is responsive to the estimated second frequency or second frequency error, wherein the joint demodulator is responsive to the second long-term automatic frequency control. First and second local automatic frequency controls also may be included in the joint demodulator, wherein the first long-term automatic frequency control is responsive to the first local automatic frequency control and the second-long-term automatic frequency control is responsive to the second local automatic frequency control. The first long-term automatic frequency control and the second long-term automatic frequency control can produce respective first and second frequency offset signals that are applied to the joint demodulator. Alternatively, a difference between the first and second frequency offsets is applied to the joint demodulator and the first frequency offset is applied to a downconverter that downconverts the jointly received first and second signals and provides the downconverted signals to the joint demodulator.

    • A Coordinated Multipoint (COMP) cell controller performs network-centric Sink adaptation for User Equipment (UE) in the CoMP cell. The CoMP cell controller receives at least infrequent channel estimates from a UE in the CoMP cell, from which it estimates downlink channel and thermal noise at the UE. The CoMP cell controller is aware of the desired signal to be received at the UE, and the intra-CoMP cell interference to the UE caused by transmissions to other UEs in the CoMP cell. The CoMP cell receives from the UE reports of inter-CoMP cell interference caused by transmissions by other CoMP cells. Based on the downlink channel quality, the desired signal, the intra-CoMP cell interference, the intex-CoMP cell interference, and the thermal noise, the CoMP cell controller performs link adaptation by selecting modulation and coding schemes, and other transmission parameters, for mi upcoming transmission duration (such as a TTI).

    • A device and method in a radio receiver for generating synchronization and channel estimation information based on three parameters consisting of a synchronization position, at least one whitening filter parameter, and a channel estimate. A spatially and temporally stacked signal model is generated by stacking (11) successive samples of temporally adjacent received signal vectors and corresponding training vectors. Initial estimates of a first one or two of the three parameters are then generated (12) based on the spatially and temporally stacked signal model. The rest of the three parameters are then computed (13-16) based on the initial estimates of the first one or two parameters. If a stopping criterion is met (17), the method ends (18) and the parameters are used to process the signal. If the stopping criterion is not met, additional iterations (13-16) are performed to improve the synchronization and estimation information.

    • A method and apparatus for jointly estimating channels used to propagate desired and interfering signals received by a wireless receiver. A blind parameter estimator in the wireless receiver includes a forward parameter estimator and a backward parameter estimator that each include an equalizer and a channel estimator for generating forward and backward channel estimates, respectively, for the desired and interfering signal channels. In one embodiment, the blind parameter estimator includes independent forward and backward parameter estimators adapted to generate independent forward and backward channel estimates, respectively, where a final channel selector is adapted to select the final channel estimates based on a comparison between error metrics associated with the forward and backward channel estimates. In another embodiment, the blind parameter estimator includes serial per-survivor processing forward and backward parameter estimators adapted to use the backward channel estimates as the final channel estimates for the desired and interfering signal channels.

    • Multipoint wireless communications are coordinated in cells with radiation that is emanated from antennas in an inward direction. In an example embodiment, an apparatus includes a first antenna, a second antenna, a third antenna and a controller. The first antenna emanates radiation from a first location in an inwardly direction for a cell. The second antenna emanates radiation from a second location in an inwardly direction for the cell. The third antenna emanates radiation from a third location in an inwardly direction for the cell. The controller coordinates the emanation of the radiation via the first, second, and third antennas so as to reduce intra-cell interference for remote terminals located within the cell. The coordination may be effected in accordance with one or more coordinated multi-point (transmission/reception) (CoMP) techniques. Different numbers of sub-cells and antennas per cell and different CoMP cell organizations may be implemented.

    • In a communication system transmitting from multiple antennas to multiple users, data transmission rates are allocated over scheduled users by varying the weights assigned to the users. The user weights determine the transmission preceding vectors used for the transmissions, which determine the data rates. In one embodiment, a set of predetermined weights is selected from a plurality of sets of weights as the one maximizing the sum, over all scheduled users, of the ratio of each user's instantaneous data rate to the average rale over prior frames. In another embodiment, the weights, preceding vectors, and data rates are frequency-specific. In another embodiment, the user weights arc determined through an iterative process of assigning initial weights, determining the precoding vectors associated with the weights, determining the channel conditions for transmission using the determined preceding vectors, and adjusting the user weights based on their relative channel conditions.
