    • Two methods in an IP Multimedia Subsystem, IMS, network. In the first method, a first function sends a SIP request other than a SIP INVITE towards a destination node (B4). If no response to the SIP request is received (B7), the first function sends a signal addressed to a second function on route to the destination node (B8). If no response to the SIP request or the signal is received (B10), the first function assumes that the second function has failed and determines whether to initiate reselection of a replacement function. If a response to the SIP request or signal is received, the first function assumes that the second function has not failed. In the second method, a first function detects a failure of a second function during an attempt to send a Session Initiation Protocol, SIP, request. The first function then determines whether conditions for reselection of a replacement function are fulfilled (B13), and only if the conditions for reselection are fulfilled, performs a reselection procedure (B14). The two methods may be used together or separately.

    • The present invention faces the issue of UE enabled to communicate with an IP Multimedia Subsystem following protocol versions older than Release 9, and provides for an alternative P-CSCF restoration procedure. In this alternative P-CSCF restoration procedure, the UE submits to the IMS network UE capability information indicating that the UE is enabled to receive a list with one or more further available P-CSCF entities and to re-register in the IMS network with one of them; at least one entity of the IMS network stores this UE capability information; upon detecting unavailability of the P-CSCF entity to handle a terminating request towards the UE, the UE capability information is provided towards and access network entity; the access network entity determines based on the received UE capability information that the UE is enabled to receive a list with one or more further available P-CSCF entities, obtains the list with further available P-CSCF entities and submits said list to the UE; and the UE reregisters to a further P-CSCF entity selected from the list.

    • A subscriber server (154) is described that routes a terminating call in a network (150) that includes a circuit switched (CS) network (104), a packet switched (PS) network (105), and an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) (108). The server (154) receives a request for routing information in relation to the terminating call from a CS node (152) in the CS network (104). A determination is made at server 154 based on whether a UE (115) associated with the terminating call is registered in the IMS (108) and whether the UE (115) has access to the PS network (105). The server (154) instructs the CS node (152) to route (158) the terminating call in the CS network (104) when the UE (115) is not registered in the IMS (108) or when the UE (115) does not have access to the PS network (105). Alternatively, the server (154) instructs the CS node (152) to send the terminating call to the IMS (108) for handling (156) when the UE (115) is registered in the IMS (108) and when the UE (115) has access to the PS network (105). In this way, a terminating call is prevented from being unnecessarily routed or handled by the IMS (108).
