    • A method implemented at a user equipment (UE) may include receiving a grant from a base station permitting the user equipment to transmit data to the base station and transmitting data to the base station, where the data includes a buffer status report (BSR) that indicates an amount of data in a buffer of the UE. The method may further include starting or restarting a discontinuous reception (DRX) timer when the data including the BSR is transmitted to the base station. The method may additionally include monitoring (730) a control channel during a duration of the DRX timer. In another implementation, a method may include receiving a feedback message in response to the data transmission including the BSR, and starting or restarting the discontinuous reception (DRX) timer when the feedback message is received. The feedback message may include an acknowledgement (ACK) or a negative acknowledgement (NACK). In a further implementation, a method may include starting a process specific hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) round trip time (RTT) timer upon transmission of the data including the BSR, starting a grant timer when the HARQ RTT timer expires, and monitoring the control channel during a duration of the grant timer.

    • Method and arrangement in a base station for providing feedback to user equipments in a cell concerning the reception status of data received from the user equipments. The base station and the user equipments are comprised in a wireless communication system, adapted for contention based transmissions. The method comprises sending a contention based grant to a plurality of user equipments within the cell, receiving data from any user equipment and verifying if the data is correctly received. Also, the method comprises sending feedback to any user equipment that has used the contention based grant, wherein the feedback comprises an ACK, if it is verified that data has been correctly received from at least one user equipment and the feedback comprises a NACK if it is verified that data has not been correctly received from any user equipment.     • In one or more embodiments, the present invention provides a method and apparatus for "early" triggering of a BSR in a relay node ( 16). Doing so is advantageous, for example, in reducing the overall time between a UE's transmission of data to a relay node ( 16) on an access link (22) and the corresponding transmission of that data from the relay node (16) to a donor base station (20) on a backhaul link (24). Of course, that example is non-limiting. More broadly, in at least one embodiment, the present invention provides for triggering a BSR in the relay node (16) right after learning that there is at least one UE (12) connected to the relay node ( 16) that wants to transmit UL data. Further, one or more embodiments provide a simple method and apparatus for using a relay node BSR to inform a donor base station (20) about the scheduled status of UEs supported by the relay node (16).
