    • Embodiments of the invention relate to a method (400) for routing traffic through a network having a plurality of nodes, at least one of said plurality of nodes being an integrated node including first and second technologies integrated inside the same node platform, the method comprising: applying (402) a transformation algorithm to the plurality of nodes for determining at least one virtual link between at least two ports of the plurality of nodes; and performing (404) a routing algorithm using the at least one virtual link to determine an optimal virtual route for the traffic through the network based on at least one cost parameter associated with the at least one virtual link. By applying a transformation algorithm to a plurality of nodes in a network, virtual links can be created between virtual ports in the nodes, which are homogenous and allow all routes through the network to be considered concurrently during a routing algorithm. This allows an optimal route to be determined based on cost parameters associated with each virtual link.

    • A node for an optical network has an electrical selector (30, 35) coupled to a first transponder for selecting which of first or second connections, is carried. A connection controller (80, 130) cooperates with other nodes to set up the first connection on a main path using a second transponder, and to reserve a first restoration path for the first connection. A second connection (best effort traffic) is set up on at least part of the reserved first restoration path by controlling the electrical selector. If the main path fails, the first connection is restored by controlling the electrical selector to select the first connection for the first restoration path in place of the second connection. By having an electrical selector, a change can be made more rapidly than if done only optically.

    • A multi-domain network (10) comprises domains (AS A - AS E) of different network technology types. A network domain (AS A) comprises a plurality of network nodes (12, 14) connected by links (13) and comprising border nodes (12) which connect with other network domains (AS B, AS C, AS D). In a first domain (AS A) of a first technology type, a method comprises determining an intra-domain topology of the nodes (12, 14) and links (13) of the domain by collecting values of at least one network topology parameter of the first technology type. The method determines a summarised intra-domain topology of paths between border nodes (12) of the domain which is described using values of at least one summarised network topology parameter. Values of the summarised network topology parameter are derived from the values of the network topology parameter of the intra-domain topology of the first technology type. The summarised network topology parameter is part of a common set of network topology parameters for advertising between domains comprising apparatus of different technology types. A domain can comprise multiple layers of different technology type.
