    • Acknowledgment signaling in a multiple carrier environment is enabled with a multiple carrier codebook having code words that jointly encode acknowledgment for at least two carriers. For an example embodiment, there is a method in a remote terminal for acknowledgment uplink signaling in a multiple-carrier mode. First, a code word is determined that jointly encodes acknowledgment signaling for at least two carriers from a multiple carrier codebook that is stored in the remote terminal. The multiple carrier codebook includes eight code words that are defined to have a single carrier codebook as a sub-codebook of the multiple carrier codebook, each code word of the eight code words having a length of ten. The multiple carrier codebook achieves a minimum Hamming distance of four among the eight code words. Second, an uplink signaling message that includes the determined code word is transmitted from the remote terminal to a wireless network node.

    • A wireless communication device or system generates transmit power control feedback for a received power control channel by determining a command error rate (CER), or by identifying a target signal quality for the power control channel according to a defined signal-quality-to-CER mapping function. Generally, the power control channel does not include error-coded data to use for CER estimation. However, in one embodiment, the channel does include known reference bits that are evaluated for CER estimation, with the estimated CER used to set the signal quality target for inner loop power control. In other embodiments, a computed reception error probability is used to identify a CER estimate according to a defined probability-to-CER mapping function. By way of non-limiting example, these embodiments may be used to provide power control feedback for power control commands transmitted on a Fractional Dedicated Physical Channel in WCDMA systems.

    • A multi-stage equalizer implementing a low complexity sequence estimation technique referred to as serial localization with indecision (SLI). The multi-stage equalizer includes a plurality of stages including one or more preliminary stages and a final stage. Each stage includes a demodulator that simultaneously equalizes and demodulates an input signal to generate an intermediate sequence estimate comprising a sequence of intermediate symbol estimates. The preliminary stages further include a signal generator to generate the input signal to the next stage. The signal generator includes a modulator to re -modulate the intermediate symbol estimates generated in the same stage and a combiner to subtract the re -modulated symbols from the input signal to generate a residual signal for input to the next stage. The signal generator is not needed in the final stage. A combiner adds the intermediate sequence estimates produced in each stage to produce the final sequence estimate. The combiner may be implemented as a single combiner or as multiple combiners to generate cumulative intermediate symbols estimates at each stage. These intermediate symbol estimates can be used as affective pilot symbols to improve channel estimation for later stages.
