    • Communication efficiency may be enhanced by using compressed headers. In an example embodiment, a method is performed by a transmitting device to reduce header size. A mapping is created between a logical channel identifier and a compressed logical channel identifier. The compressed logical channel identifier occupies fewer bits than the logical channel identifier. The mapping is transmitted to a receiving device. A compressed header that includes the compressed logical channel identifier is formulated. A communication that includes the compressed header is transmitted to the receiving device. In another example embodiment, a method is performed by a receiving device to decode a header having a reduced size. A mapping and a communication including a compressed header are received. A compressed logical channel identifier is extracted from the compressed header. A logical channel identifier is recovered from the compressed logical channel identifier using the mapping.

    • Teachings presented herein provide reduced computational complexity and/or memory requirements for a mobile terminal to determine the power backoff required for a multi-carrier uplink signal. In particular, the mobile terminal determines whether its power headroom falls below a pre-defined power headroom threshold, indicating that it is headroom limited. If so, it5 quantizes power allocated to each carrier of the multi-carrier uplink signal according to a pre-defined quantization policy. In doing so, the mobile terminal thereby reduces the possible configurations that may be selected for the multi-carrier uplink signal. Thus, in one embodiment, the mobile terminal stores the required backoff in a look-up table for only the configurations that may be selected when the mobile terminal is headroom limited. This relieves10 the memory requirements of the mobile terminal as compared to storing the required backoff for all possible configurations of the multi-carrier uplink signal.

    • In one aspect, the present invention exploits the fact that the radio interface parameters used for multi-cell operation of a terminal are typically correlated. That is, in the uplink and/or downlink direction, the radio interface parameters used in the two or more cells supporting simultaneous multi-cell communication with the terminal may be related. Accordingly, in one or more embodiments presented herein, a terminal is provided one full set of parameters for the reception of data (downlink communication) and/or transmission of data (uplink communication) in one cell (the anchor serving cell), and some additional (delta) infoπnation that describes how the set of parameters for one or more other cells (the secondary serving cells) differs from the first cell. Correspondingly, the terminal is configured to derive the additional parameters needed for communicating in the one or more other cells, based on the full set of parameters and the delta information.
